Legend Brewing Launches in DC w/ 5 Different Cask Ales at ChurchKey!

The time has finally come for a regional craft-brewing standard to make their way into the District. On Wednesday, April 24th, we are excited to launch the brews of the classic Legend Brewing Company, Virginia’s oldest craft brewery (established in 1994), at ChurchKey, and we are certainly celebrating their arrival as only CK can…with 5 different Legend cask ales flowing from our beer engines!

Don’t miss this opportunity to taste these handcrafted brews just as the brewmaster has always intended…unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally carbonated and served at cellar temp. We will be pouring the real ale iterations of each of the following all evening long: Lost City Saison, Hopfest IPA, Porter, Golden IPA and Brown Ale! It is just amazing how well these brews show on cask…the creamy carbonation combined with a mild chill allows for the fullest expression of each ale’s flavors nuances!

Additionally, we will be serving up some crisp, refreshing Legend Pilsner on draft during the evening…a beer that has made it all the way to the championship round of this year’s Washington Post Beer Madness blind tasting tournament! A pretty outstanding achievement as Legend Pilsner is one of the final two remaining in a taste-off of 100% locally-brewed beers this year…

Here’s some more info on the Legend brews we are pouring next Wednesday:

Brown Ale:
Legend’s flagship and their most popular beer. The Brown Ale is a full-bodied version of a British Brown Ale. Expect a rich, malt-forward brew with a beautiful mahogany tone. Generous amounts of specialty malts bring flavors of sweet caramel, toasted nuts, coffee, and molasses, all perfectly balanced by a steady but cautious hop dryness. Fruity undertones provided by our house yeast strain bring the final flavor element to round out this world-class ale. 6% ABV.

Hopfest:
Hopfest begins with a sturdy barley malt background including Munich and aromatic malts, as well as a few medium kilned malts producing a rich, deep orange colored beer. Step two, the hops; Hopfest sports a distinct pine/fruit aroma. Expect an intensely flavored brew, with hop flavor lasting throughout. There is a toasty, earthy background, adding a rich, malty dimension to the long finish. The end result is a full flavored IPA with a strong malt backbone and long satisfying hop finish. 6.5% ABV.

Porter:
Legend’s Porter is rich, roasty and loaded with chocolate and coffee flavors. Healthy amounts of specialty malts including caramel malt and roasted barley make this sweet black ale robust and full-bodied. Hopping is minimal and for balance only. This beer is an excellent pair to most any meal, especially meat dishes and desserts. Or it can serve as a meal on its own. 6% ABV.

Golden IPA:
Made in the image of an English IPA, Legend Golden is a big, full-bodied brew with the perfect balance between malty sweetness and hop bitterness. Years ago, as an experimental brew, this underdog of a beer found its way into the hearts of Legend patrons and became a cult classic in Richmond. Legend Golden has been described as a "high class malt liquor" by a notable source. This strong ale sports a rich gold color, an aroma of sweet malt and clean hops, and an earthy, fruity flavor. 7% ABV.

Lost City Saison:
Pouring a vibrant pale orange, this traditional French/Belgian farmhouse ale is sturdy yet sessionable. Yeast derived fruity and spicy (citrus, pepper) aromas are layered on a soft malt canvas. Moderate levels of herbal, spicy noble hops add complexity. The finish is tart, dry and quenching. 6.5% ABV.

Pilsner:
Legend Pilsner has a deep gold color and a firm malt background. The emphasis is on the assertive hopping with Hallertau and Sterling varieties. Expect a beer that is substantial in body while finishing with a crisp dryness. Spicy and floral hop flavors are evident throughout. 6% ABV.
