We like tattoos. We're good friends with Bad Pen Pal , and one day while in their studio getting inked, an idea was born that maybe a beer made with tattoos in mind would be a good thing. Even better would be that if the label was designed by a tattoo artist.

Lehe Pruulikoda like to do experimental stuff with beer, so we approached them. Ideas were thrown around, ideas were thrown out (squid ink, carbon in beer? No). Styles were discussed - had to look like ink of course, but easy drinking and not a heavy stout/porter. Black IPA? Perfect. Something a little extra to give it a kick also. How about chilli? No, already been done. How about pepper? How about black Tellicherry peppercorns to give the same sort of tingle that a tattoo would give you? Decided.

Next up the label and name. Bad Pen Pal's Kaspar Kannelmäe came up with a good one. "Rinse Water". Each time a tattooist changes ink colour, they have to clean the needle in water. After a colourful tattoo, there's quite a lot of inky water gathered in the glass. Back in the old days, the rite of passage to becoming a tattoo artist, was drinking this rinse water. Turned you from an apprentice into a professional. So that's how the beer got its name. The background of the label is a tattoo rag - the cloth used to clean up after the tattoo is done. The lettering style is certainly traditional, the beer on the other hand is not.

We're going to be tapping the first keg at Pudel, as well as a few other Lehe beers. Come and try and let us know what you think about it. Definitely doesn't taste like rinse water of old, but for sure tastes like a modern beer. And just like when you have one tattoo, you're already thinking about your next one by the time it's finished. This beer is the same :)
