Not a bad list. But for me, if I’m measuring ’best beer countries’ based on what they are doing right now in the ’modern beer era’, my list would probably be something like: |
Just about to say ... Belgium at #1! |
My list: |
Originally posted by Theydon_Bois I know this is a separate topic altogether, but the Cult of Belgian Beer is too much for me sometimes. Yes, they have world class breweries and are the birthplace of many great styles. I try to visit once per year because they have such a great beer tradition there. But the diversity of beer is lacking. As with other great, traditional brewing cultures (e.g. Germany, Czech Republic) they are somewhat shackled to their tradition, and conservative drinkers (and to an extent brewers that don’t want to see change) prevent new development. The UK has been extremely fortunate in how it has been able to maintain its traditional drinking culture - i.e. classic cask conditioned beer, in styles like bitter, golden, porter et al - while still supporting a burgeoning ’craft’ beer scene. |
Originally posted by Theydon_Bois What I’ll say in defense of Belgium (and Germany for that matter) is that while they don’t have as many new breweries and styles as some of the other countries, at least the majority of what they make is pretty solid. The US may have 4000 breweries but 3800 of them are mediocre at best. |
My list is a bit different, main emphasis on "drinkability", not on exclusivity…: |
Czech Republic is top five, so surely in the top 13. No way Ireland should be on that list and Norway is very questionable. |
Originally posted by t0rin0 Hmmm ... They have world class Lambics - obviously and some top draw Quads, Belgian Strongs etc, and I like the ambiance in many places. However customer service can be non existent, particularly speed wise, and there is a hell of a lot of run of the mill overly sweet booze bombs once you’ve tried the best and move onto the rest. |
Originally posted by JK Yes Ireland is a mystery. Maybe I am missing something. |
