We used to throw our waste and feces out the window into the street, some people really enjoyed that convenience, but at some point enough of us realized it caused a public health problem. |
Originally posted by 3fourths I agree that, if you took a poll, most people probably think smoking bans have been a good thing (though I suspect this will vary depending on the country). That doesn’t mean they’re right. There are a lot of things most people believe that aren’t true, even *gasp* nice, civilized First-World people.
I dunno how much people enjoyed throwing waste into the street. I suspect most people would rather shit in a well-plumbed toilet, and be able to put their rubbish in a bin. But suppose some people really did enjoy that. Should it be made illegal to do it? Probably. Partly because there was no reasonable way people could escape the ill-effects of this sort of practice. You coudn’t just choose not to use streets. Also, it has significant effects on children and animals who aren’t responsible agents who are able to choose how to balance the costs and effects of these things. I’d need to know the details, and it would have to be done in a way which didn’t conflict with the concerns above, but in principle I wouldn’t object to some shit-defenestration fetishists setting up their own little enclosed area where they were able to indulge themselves. |
Originally posted by GarethYoung Oh but you most certainly could, you can choose to not go outside, not live in a crowded city, not live next to anyone else, so on and so forth. This is not different than you saying people should choose not to go into a public space because you want to light a cigarette, which to me is a very selfish view.
It seems then that you understand how I feel about smoking in public. So we can argue about this for many pages and we’re not going to change each other’s minds. I’m glad that most reasonable people accept that smoking is dangerous to the public health and are okay with the bans. The smokers will die off and the world will continue without them and things will be better, but it’s a slow process. |
