Seems like it would want to put it in a hop bag so I could fish it back out if things got too licorice-y. I’m thinking this was a 10 gallon recipe. http://www.ratebeer.com/Recipe.asp?RecipeID=116 This pre-dated Mikeller’s black Hole by several years. 40.78lbs Maris Otter Pale Malt ! that is a lot of mash!! wow! Did you do that in 2 separate 5 gallon mash tons?

Custom made false bottom? Or do they already sell something with similar dimensions that will keep mash from getting stuck?
that is pretty impressive!

It was put together by myself and three others I brew with. One was a plumber and provided all of the copper and stainless, and another was a machinist who made the manifold and sparge apparatus at the top. I used Water Weld to fix a ball valve into the cooler and it had a coupler inside that attached to the manifold. A March pump and a bunch of tubing connected the mash tun to the heat exchanger which was a 16 gallon kettle with a copper coil.

So, the beer is finally in bottles. The recipe can be found here. We undershot the gravity a bit so I made up the difference with molasses. I started with three six-gallon batches. I did one with 1056 American Ale , one with 3787 Trappist High Gravity and one with Windsor. I split this into six three-gallon batches: 1056 - Plain (bottled as is) - Faux Bulleit Bourbon Barrel (I used a mix of medium and dark toast oak) 3787 - Mexican Chocolate - actually1 pound Cocao Nibs + 1 Vanilla Bean soaked in vodka + 3 cinnamon sticks - Cold brewed Coffee Windsor - Faux Lagavulin Barrel - 1 pound Toasted Unsweetened Coconut + 1 Vanilla Bean We’ll see how this goes as it ages but my early favorite is the Mexican Chocolate, The coffee and plain versions are nice. The Lagavulin Barrel is smoky as hell. I think I should have left well enough alone and not added the Vanilla Bean to the Coconut. Oh, well.
