Hi,

Me, my father and some friends are going to Bamberg on the 29th of June and traveling back home on thursday the 2nd of July. Any tips of beers, pubs, accomodation or other activities is appreciated. Any special beer releases close to this date? I’ve read the Bamberg thread a bit down in this forum and also watched the Bamberg A City of Beer movie.

Also if anybody want to make an IP trade I’m all for it. Traveling by car so I can bring some beers from Sweden. I’m also a homebrewer so I can bring some of my own beers if that is interesting.

Cheers!

Oh great, Swedes invading Franken again. :)

A good start will be with Gerhard at Café Abseits. The various Bamberger brewery taverns are a must. That might be enough for a few short days. If not, a trip into the country for a Bierkeller visit or two.

Hi Stefan,

I am the owner of the Café Abseits. I have friend You at Facebook and can friend You with some others in Facebook.

If You want to meet a homebrewer: Norbert Krines and friends of the so-called "Hausbrauerei Gleisdreieck"
https://www.facebook.com/hausbrauereigleisdreieck?fref=ts

And I can friend You with some owners/brewmasters of Bamberg breweries.

In the days of Your visit there are not special events. The time of bocks is between Oktober and December and March and Mai in the Spring.

But in the summer time the beergardens are open and so You can find enough non-seasonal beers.

I recommend a visit of the malthouse Weyermann (wednesday, 2 p.m., 2 hours, 15 Euro with a small tasting of beers of the Braumanufaktur Weyermann.
http://www.weyermann.de/eng/fuehrungen.asp?go=fue&umenue=yes&idmenue=44&sprache=2

The second malthouse in Bamberg (Bamberger Mälzerei doesn’t offer visits).

The Franconian Brewery Museum
http://www.brauereimuseum.de/

An article of Joe Stange about the locations You shoul visit if You have only one day in Bamberg:
http://www.thirstypilgrim.com/2010/05/what-to-do-if-you-only-have-one-day-in.html

I have seen that You have tasted some beers of Andreas Gänstaller. Maybe You want to visit him in Schnaid. I can friend You with him.
It isn’t easy to come to Schnaid. So You should combine the visit of the Gänstaller-Bräu with the three beergardens of the Kreuzberg (on the mountain/hill over Schnaid).
One of them:
http://www.brauerei-friedel.de/

Another possibility is a bike tour or a tour with the city busses. In the north of Bamberg You find:
- Wagner, Merkendorf
- Hummel, Merkendorf
- Drei Kronen, Memmelsdorf
- Höhn, Memmelsdorf
- Göller, Drosendorf
- Knoblauch, Schammelsdorf
A nice day tour. You can walk from one brewery to the others or take a bus.

Another half or day tour is the city of Forchheim (with the train), some brewpubs in the city and some stalls in the forest/hill near Forchheim: "Kellerwald Forchheim" ("beer garden forest").
http://www.forchheim.de/content/kellerwald-forchheim

Some weeks later there is the beer festival "Annafest". But You find before and behinde enough stalls and beers.

Rooms:
- Brauerei Spezial
- Brauerei Fässla
between the railway station and the central bus station (ZOB). Cheap and with a good breakfest (Spezial). Double room: 80 € with breakfast.

- Best Western, in the near of Spezial and Fässla.
- Ibis

Or You ask Frank Wetzel for his apartment in the Sandstraße (near Schlenkerla)
Mark Anderseon says: "Great location, very comfortable, very affordable, and of course (as many here already know) Frank is a great guy."

I definitely do! I’ll be bringing some homebrew no matter what. Will probably add some comercial beers as well.

Skål!

Just a small nitpick: I don’t think they serve from wooden barrels, but from the "normal" gravity "Bauchfass" that has a plastic outer surface that looks like imitation wood.

And to the OP...I would genuinely love to try the famous (?) low-alcohol Pilsner Urquell that you Swedes have. I could trade you homebrewed half-IPA for it. Or regular Pilsner Urquell.

Forgot I wrote that thing. Mostly holds up.

You can usually find a Gänstaller beer from the barrel at Stöhrenkeller. You can stop on the walk down the hill, after visiting Spezial Keller. And Wilde Rose Keller. Etc.
