We could revive all the ratings (as unrateable beers only have hidden, not deleted ratings) in a RB article about the general issue of hype influence.
And another remark: I once did a blind of Westy, Bernardus, and Rochefort and was able to recognize and distinguish the three consistently. And another time I gave the three beers to friends of mine who like beer but don’t know beers (so you could call it blind, because none of them knew what Westy was), and all of them preferred Westy. And all this despite the fact that I find Bernardus the best of the three (and did so in the blind tasting as well).
It should probably also be noted that our tasting group (jonas, MoritzF, and Ritzn) did a vertical tasting of Belgians (including different Westy vintages) along with some new kids adjunct Stouts, including, for instance, Noa Pecan Mud Cake. We were a bit surprised to see that Westy basically has no flavour when compared next to the hypermodern beers Omnipollo and co. brew. It’s still great, but very subtle. Maybe the fact that this was a "Craft beer festival" in 2017 influenced the ticks. |
