What’s the policy on RateBeer for rating beers brewed where you work? Mostly just curious but I may find a job in the industry.

Generally frowned upon, and likely entirely self policed.

Pretty sure it’s against the rules, and either way, is highly frowned upon. Tough to police though.

That’s what I thought. That’s the way I plan on dealing with it, but I’ve suspected a local user of doing this. Maybe he’ll read this and get a clue.

We have no blocking mechanisms or punishments in place, we use the honor system and occasionally delete rates that violate the policy.

Some people are just bound and determined to post a few high rates for their own beers though. It’s a tiny percentage of the database but it’s still irritating on principle.

I don’t do it.

Many in the industry stop rating altogether. Some just start using untappd and check in without giving a rating.

I don’t rate, period. I don’t think that it’s an appropriate forum to express criticism of your peers.

Agreed with all of the above. I have ratings of places and of beers that I ended up working for, but never once employed by them, and I also essentially stopped rating once I got my footing in the industry.

Shilling your own beers seems a bit low-brow if not unethical.
