I got there at 1:00. Got in a big ass line. I thought no big deal considering how they did such a great job at DLD this year. Then it took me about 2+ hours just to breach the gate. Then another 1/2 hour to hour at that point to buy beer. So 2.5-3 hours to get some brew. Not terrible considering past DLD’s people waited reportedly 8 hours or more. I just expected more as far as the line went because of how well they did at DLD. They cranked far more people through than yesterday in less time. That just didn’t make sense to me.

Beer pours were anywhere from a half ounce to half glass depending on the table and who was doing the pouring for samples. I actually enjoyed the baller stout. Too bad it ran out. Along with Surly and Struise running out as well. That really was too bad because then everyone made longer lines at the other 3 tables left.

I wish the bartenders at the 3 Floyds knew what they were pouring. They had a BA rotating tap handle. I compared what I was told I was drinking with others and we were all told different things for the same beer. I know I had a BA barleywine. But they didn’t know what the base beer was. Just some barleywine. Another BA beer that had raspberries a bit later. That might have been the BA robert the spruce with raspberries? They weren’t completely sure. Or maybe it was the one that tasted a lot like anise. Anyone here know what the BA rotating taps were? I’d like to know what I was drinking since the people pouring didn’t know.

Food trucks were a great idea. Lines once I got my bottles weren’t completely terrible I suppose. Overall it was great seeing some old friends, meeting some new ones, and I did have a good time overall. I just don’t think I’ll be driving over 600 miles again next year. That part didn’t make everything else worth it for me.

Oh, and I didn’t see a single band. I don’t like that kind of music.

Was anyone else escorted to the drunk table upfront by the gates or just me? My first one and probably last. It was nice to get out of town with a buddy and see what a 3 Floyds event was like. Next time, Ill just put the $ towards granite counter tops for the kitchen.

If you want a very well run event, attempt to get tickets to the Great Taste of the Midwest. 6,000+ people, everyone gets in the gates in about 20 minutes.

The only thing that’s tough is if you want to get into the Presentation Tents (Food & Beer) you have to get there early and wait a while, as they are each limited to 100 people.

I think GTMW is the premier beer event in the entire midwest and rivals other events in the nation for sure.

I just think a lot of us were dissappointed in how the event was run after such a successful DLD 2011 with over 100% more people attending.

Makes sense. Haven’t attended DLD so I can’t personally comment on that.

Like any event, there’s going to be inconveniences: long lines, bottles being sold out, people cutting in line, ATM’s not working, no bottles of water for sale, etc. But all in all compared to other beer releases I’ve been attended, I thought 3 Floyds did a pretty damn good job. Good beer, good food, good music, and good fellowship; how can anybody complain about that? Could you imagine what the blogs would have been like for Woodstock if they had them back in the day?? How much people would have bitched about the inconveniences then?? I guess if waiting in line and drinking beers with friends is that terrible, then maybe the anti-social Ted Kacynski types who find it so unbearable, should forget about some of the truly enjoyable things in life like football games, concerts, beer releases, and public festivals.....

Compared the improvements I witnessed first hand with DL 2011, it seems like they took 3 steps back from that from all the shit I’ve been reading.

IMO, the main problems with the event was how under staffed it was (just 1 person checking IDs), not enough beer and food, and rather poor planning to give the ticket for the samples of beer at the end of the bottle line (sure would have been nice to have a runner with samples while others waited in line).

In the end it basically had all of the problems with DLDs in the past but without sharing beers. So that makes it a pretty poor event when the only reason to go to DLD is for the sharing of beers. I’m sure the people that had the best time didn’t worry about the beers and were just there to drink gumballhead and listen to the music.

I was double fisted with Pannapot Reserva 2008 and Baller Stout before thrashing to Municipal Waste. Had my coat and other stuff unwatched in a corner and nobody touched it. My bottles were safely tucked and away in the car. Life is what you make of it. I remember all the great beer and people I met, not lines. My wallet tells me a different story though...
