It has a cool old world vibe that they cultivate, and the keg cooler with the chain crane is impressive to see. The bar has a bunch of church keys set into the stone top. Service was great, prompt, super knowledgeable, and as freindly as possible with the crowd. Selection is super impressive, how many places have The Alchemist and Cantillon next to Fonta Flora and Creature Comforts. It is the best in DC for a reason.

The dimly lit bar, set in the back end of the sprawling narrow space, feels too dark in daytime when the sunlight filters in from the front. The keg room being above the bar in ladder-access loft is pretty cool and visually impressive. Fairly full on a mid-afternoon Saturday, and the way people are bustling around gives the impression that this is probably, at least functionally, somewhat of a volume operation.

This tap menu is probably the flagship of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group, in size, scope and purpose; the imported specialties featured heavily at the Sovereign and top-flight American craft breweries are each given ample space here. The bottle list is also enormous, and though there may be issues with freshness in many cases, it is impressive; also impressive is how carefully demarcated the list is, not only according to styles but to flavor profiles within them.

The food menu offers many of the same items available at Birch and Barley, though often worded or presented differently on the menu - a confusing choice in my opinion. Service was a touch slow, and disconnected - another sign that Churchkey is too popular not to function as a volume bar/restaurant in some respects. Notwithstanding, in beer terms alone it is obviously a top-flight destination.

Up a dark set of stairs into a slightly less dark second floor, but still so poorly lit that it took a while to be able to see well enough. (Maybe the slow service is intentional to allow your eyes time to adjust?) The bar is crowded on a Saturday in the middle of February at about 5 or 6 PM. I manage to grab one of the lone bar seats and begin the waiting game. I get passed over by 3 separate people behind the bar before a fourth (the barback) pours me a water and brings me a menu. But he can’t serve anything, so the waiting game continues. I wait for about ten minutes, as a new couple who comes in after me and sits down next to me gets served right away. I finally get in an order for a couple of 4oz pours and a $16 personal pizza (more later). That is a nice thing in regards to their sizable beer list, they do offer smaller pours, albeit it mostly in the $1/oz range. I get my beers, and not too long after my $16 pizza that serves one. It’s doughy and slightly undercooked. This is a disappointment. The beers are fine, and eventually after some flagging, I get a few more pours. Service was very lacking, and I’d go a good chunk of time with no attention from the three bartenders, then one would see to me, and the other two would quickly follow. Seems like there could be a better way of organizing that, perhaps a section of the bar each instead of all of them basically making the rounds through the place. I’m glad I went, but if that’s what the hype is all about, I’m certainly in no hurry to get back. Prices are high, service was lacking, food was poor.

Stopped in for dinner and beers with a colleague, finally got work to send me to DC this was only psot i had time to hit up this time. Nice decor friendly staff, tons of beers on tap and bottle list is apparently huge although i didn’t peruse. when i was there lots of Virginia and Maryland beers and some DC Brau variants on cask. i like you can get small pours for pretty cheap (veruss manhattan this place is a bargain). quite enjoyable

Visited here a few times after work and it’s always packed - Yuppies, beer nerds, you name it. A ridiculous number of taps and bottles makes for great drinking. Prices are slightly pricier given the prime location. Service is a bit slow given there are only about 3 bartenders and way too many people at one time. Includes booths and counter seating otherwise you’ll have to stand. Due to the number of people, cleanliness sometimes seems to be a problem - spilt beer and food all over the place. But what makes this place stand out is probably the beer, the number of gems they have on the tap list sometimes are ridiculous for such a place out in DC. Only second issue is that these beers run out very fast. I once visited for a beer that was tapped at 4 pm and already sold out likely within the hour.

Diverse tap list - some gems if nothing crazy on the day we visited. Both tap and bottle list significantly overpriced. Had 4 beers on tap, and some food. Couldn’t justify the bottle markups unless there was a whale on there, which there was not. Slowish but friendly service.
