Nice decor. The kind of place I’d go drink a beer or two. Ambiance was warm and friendly. Service was competent and knowledgeable. Selection is decent, with some nice craft offering, but nothing to spend a whole night ticking like a pig. Did not eat. Value seemed decent (but money is nothing to me). Nice place, but mostly as part of a more vast evening plan.

Visited on a Friday for lunch. It was already quite packed but our welcoming hostess quickly found us a table. Around 20 taps of almost exclusively local beers. The lunch menu mostly consists of burgers and sandwiches but there’s an extensive variety of starters, a bit pricy though. We sat indoor, but the courtyard terrace looks inviting, definitely next time.
Small bar area with a few stools, dining area and outside patio. The tap selection was disappointing and half the taps were empty anyway. Service was painfully slow, and I was seated at the bar. I think they may have had a change over in shift but the bar was left unattended for ages. It’s a nice location and all but forgettable place.

When I visited: Mid-November 2014.
What I had: Bicycle Craft Oatmeal Porter and Neustadt Springs Mill Gap Bitter on tap, Grilled Hanger Steak Melt for lunch, some waters.
What I liked: Upscale gastropub interior that still manages to be comfortable and welcoming, chatty and attentive service at the bar, large and mostly local draft list with good style variation and several breweries I hadn’t heard of before, server was happy to provide samples, food was on point, had a great conversation with one of the bar patrons, this is the type of place I would frequent if I lived in Ottawa.
What I disliked: Food prices are high but the quality is there, very few IPAs on tap when I visited, bar seating is limited, adding one or two imports (from Quebec, USA, or elsewhere) would make the draft lineup that much better.
Would I go back? Definitely.

Packed on a busy Friday night, the staff were friendly, the selection decent but it had a real restaurant/pub vibe to it. This is somewhere I’d go for lunch rather than dinner. When we walked in my brother said this looks posh/pricey and he wasn’t far wrong...
Among the better places in Ottawa, especially to catch up on all the local offerings. Always have a few broadhead, Beyond the Pale, Cassel, Kichesippi, and Neustadt on tap with a few others from time to time. Service is friendly and the decor is cool as long as you end up on the bar half of the restaurant - the other part feels a bit remote and neglected in terms of vibe. Food is good, but typical Ottawa prices. Offer cheap taster flights of four here - great to get a smattering of the local microbreweries.
Good solid place for tasty higher end food that always has a number of craft beers on tap. Focus used to be more on Quebec brews but now they support a lot of the local stuff happening. That being said in the market there are much better places, be it for food (Murray Street Cafe and Sidedoor to name but two that are close) and a better combined beer and food option (Brothers).
Although seated in a beautiful Byward Market building, the faux English pub interior did not seduce us from the get-go. The huge, stonewalled shared terrace though is quite an oasis with all its shade on hot and humid days like the one on which we visited in early June. We were coming hoping for la totale, the full gastropub experience. We had some pretty good plates and the beer selection was nice enough, but we ended up finding the fancier venue, more expensive prices and not necessarily tastier if often more complex plates less convincing than what seemed like a friendlier atmosphere just a few blocks away at Brothers Beer Bistro. It’s hard not to compare the two when they have the same food attention, a similar tap selection and are so close to each other. And while Black Tomato has lots of strong points, it did not reach my heart the same way, not convincing me that I would want to spend more time here than what is required to finish my meal, in large part because what is to me a better alternative is close by.
