We visited the brewery last month when we were town. Make sure you reserve your place on the tour well in advance, they do fill up. Beautiful facility, informative and friendly tour guides. My one gripe was the sample room. While you can’t argue the "value" since the tour was free, I would have gladly payed a few bucks for the tour if if meant getting to try a couple Smokestacks or at the very least got to have one sample of everything they were pouring (they don’t give you enough tokens to do that). The gift shop was awesome, lots of cool swag at very good prices.

OK...maybe I had bad luck! but this week during a trip driving cross country (Boulder to West Palm Beach) my girlfriend and I, both big beer drinkers, were excited enough about Boulevard brewing co. to make them one of our stops. Unfortunately for us, Boulevard did not feel quite the same. They didn’t pick up the phone and instead put me through some automated phones service when I tried to call ahead, what is this Budweiser (I prefer Avery where Adam picks up the phone when I call). Then when we arrived, they tell us we needed reservations to take the tour--fair enough-- but further tell us we can’t drink any of their beers unless we’ve taken the tour. Now maybe Missouri has some weird brewery onsite laws, but come on. After much convincing of a very VERY rude secretary/guy at the door, I was able to drink some beer. But even the guys serving it to me were rude because I hadn’t taken the tour! Further, none of them were brewers and were only as knowledgeable as an average beer fan about their brew (Ratman knows 1000X more about Avery than these guys know about their own brewery and they are serving the beer!!!!) Although the beer was awesome and free--very hard to complain about-- they didn’t have any special taps that you can’t find at Boulder liqourmart. These guys need to lighten up, their beer isn’t that good! I even told them, if a fellow beer drinker is excited enough to drive across the country and put your brewery on their list of stops, make them feel welcome... Cigar City sure did (other stop on our drive). Maybe I’m spoiled by Boulderites kindness but these guys need to lighten up and work on their Southern hospitality! Beers great but I’m boycotting from here out...there are enough good breweries who are nice guys too to worry about these guys!

Best micro tour I’ve been to: Boulevard has upgraded the tour process by expanding the meeting area with a new hospitality room. The go-to beer this tour was the Special Reserve Nutcracker, with a very savory hoppy aftertaste. Harvest Daze is now out, in the Smokestack series. It’s a wheat wine beer with a good punch.

As far as beer tours go, this is a pretty cool one. The new facility is really something to see and the beer is fantasic. They’ve always got a few test products for you to try. I got to try the pils and the Tank 7 Saison which was phenomenal. The time I went they had one of the brewers pulling taps so he was very informative and could answer about any question about any of the beers. I can’t understand why in the world the tour books up so far in advance but I enjoyed myself none the less.
