It doesnít look like much from the outside, but upon entering Brasserie 4:20 you are transported into one of the hippest, most modern-looking beer bars you will find anywhere on this planet Earth, and I am being totally serious. The beer selection is good, and there are some interesting things on on any given day. The food here is exceptional. They specialize in seafood, and I wouldnít say that I would tell anyone I like fish, but I sampled most of the menu here and loved every bite of food I tasted. Really top shelf. While this place is "everyman" accessible, as a woman, I would highly recommend this as a great place to bring a date.
Outside the tourist area and located on the type of fast driving street where you donít expect to find a beer bar like this one. You wonít find many typical tourists in there. This bar attracts true beer-geeks as well as local beer lovers. The simple lighten 4:20 on the outside is not too inviting. Interior is surprising, this place is actually quite classy. Medium size, sits about 100. The setting (tables, chairs, dťcor) is as appropriate for easting as good dinner as it is for a long night of drinking. Food is unusual for a pub, a bit pricy and consists mainly of fish and seafood dishes. You can order snacks (fries, chicken wings, etc.). About one dozen tap lines with mostly non-italian micros. Some interesting items on tap but the tap list is not the main attraction. The bottle list is the reason you go there. Again the Italian micros are under-represented, Brasserie 4:20 is mostly about imported beer. Americans, Danishes, British, Belgians, Dutch, etc. You ask for the bottle list and they give you that long, very long list with a few hundreds of a bottles. A lot of De Molen, Mikkeller, etc. But then you can ask for the second bottle list, the one called the ďvintage listĒ that comes in a nice book. This one has the lambics and various aged and special vintage beers. All kind of old lambics, old vintages of BigFoot and others. You can order 3 Fonteinen Millenium (A LOT of them) or Isabelle Proximus at about 150 Euros a piece (ouch! over US$200). They have a few aged bottles that I personally believe should not be aged but overall this bottle list is to die for. Service is amazing and very knowledgeable. Each bottle is opened and poured as if it was a precious 3 Fonteinen Framboos. And if the owner (Alex) recognizes you as a beer geek he will open crazy bottle after crazy bottle. This guy is nuts. Alex is to Europe what Chris Lively of Ebenezerís is to North-America. I visited the place twice. This is one of my favourite beer bar on the planet.
Ok this is a Tricky one. Yeah we were treated like Royalty when Alex Organised RBESG 2010 ... but even trying to ignore that This has to be one of the Best bars i have ever been into.
They had UK Cask ales from some of the better UK brewies, they had De Molen, Nogne, De struise and Mikkeller to name just a few from there many taps. Both Downstairs and the Wonderfull roof gardens were comfortableand relaxing places to eat and drink.
The food while too fish based for my liking was superb... so while my choice wasnt great what there was was amazing ... and if you liek fish well im sure this is just the place for you...
While i like the idea of only beer, whisky and water, I cant help but thinking a few choice alternatives would make it easier to get your mates along, and offer a decent soft drink for the driver... But the place seemed busy most of the time so it seems to be working...
The staff were amazing despite being served by three different people over the course of the evening they had my bill spot on (with a hefty discount from Alex) ive no idea how they managed to keep track of what i ordered as i wasnt sitting in one place all night, and some were ordered from the table others from the bar...
Yeah its dear (well normally Huge thanks to Alex for his generousity) but thats because they serve some of the best beers available sourced from all over the world. ... and while value is about the only area this one misses out on top spot on MY WIFE WOULD HATE ME TO LIVE NEAR HERE... as i would be there most nights, scared that i would miss out on the net great beer to appear...
And should i ever win the lottery the first thing i will be doing is picking Alexs brain on how to do the same thing here in Edinburgh ... If every town had a bar like this we could convert the Macro drinkers in there droves
Like fonefan I have to say canít claim to be 100% objective. The service and ambiance was probably helped by the RBESG event taking place here. But the food, the beer, the decoration, wasnít just made up for a weekend. Itís a cozy and relaxed place, completely dedicated to serving great (non-Italian only) beer and great food. The fish carpaccio and raw shellfish served with Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze was simply one of my best meals ever. Lots of exciting beer on the tap list. And the roof top beer garden is an awesome night spot. Or so I have heard from more sober beer lovers :)
4:20 and Ma Che Siete Venuti a Faí alone are worth your plan ticket to Rome, know that.
Yes Daaamnn. It was true what I read about this place before coming here. World class in every aspect! Rare beers - international. Amazing range of some of the best in the world. Service and interior the dopest. I will return!
First of all I have to say Iíve never met such a generous host as Alex was for us at RBESG, I just cannot thank him enough for that and for the amazing beer experience he has given us that weekend. As for his brasserie, itís wordclass as well. Great interior, beautiful tap system, great and daily rotating beer list, very nice staff (check the redhaired girl ;-), good to great food. Rooftop patio is excellent, looks like a German Biergarten and they even have different beers on than downstairs. Crowd is mainly young Italians from the alternative scene, very relaxed atmosphere here, especially after hours ;-) Donít know if the bottled beers we had were for sale as well, but if so this has the best bottle selection Iíve ever seen. Superb. Thanks again Alex, and I will definitely be back when in Rome!
This bar is by far one of the greatest beer spots in the world. Tons of fantastic and rare bottles and a fantastic fast changing line up of taps. The ambiance is fantastic and with the Biergarten at the roof top this bar is never too crowded. Alex is the best host Ive ever visited. He know all about the beer. Theu also have some very fantastic whiskies. The food is incredible. I will come back over and over again!
I might not be too objective after a RBESG arranged by Alex,
But Brasserie 4:20 is without any doubt one of the few real amazing beer spots in the world.
Beer selection is amazing, the sea-food is the best i got in Rome and Alex and the staff are some of the friendliest people i have meet. 4:20 serves beers, water and whisky only. No wines, soda, cocktails, they have true dedication for the beers and the food they serve, beyond anything we would see. I will happy spend more days and nights here, so 4:20 you can be sure that we will be coming back soon. Is it value for my money, for me yes. Thanks a lot, Alex ;O)
(please make a web.page with a updated blackboard of what is on tap)

Great selection of draft beers and bottles. Very kind staff. Amazing food. Just one little criticism: the service temperature of beer is often too high to be in Rome, where the room temperature is almost tropical. Aniway one of the best place to taste good beer in Rome.
