Kölns zweitbestes Kölsch gibt es in der Malzmühle. Ambiente wie es kölscher nicht sein kann, leckere Speisen und mittlerweile auch ein "Spezialbier" (Feynbier). Wären die Preise für alles nicht so hoch würde man gerne öfter einkehren.
The taphouse end of this now multi-part but still smallish and family-run brewery business. One of only four real brewery taps in Cologne - the others are Päffgen, Sünner and Hellers - and for me the most atmospheric. Unique for being uncarbonated tank beer. Gets packed with pre-booked diners at times, which is the financial backbone of the place, and a pain but you can usually find a seat. Often empty in the afternoon. Scrub-top tables, above average food, career waiters (Köbesse) and a few uniquely beautiful touches. Along with Päffgen the only must-includes in Köln.
There are 3 parts to this complex - the craft beer bar which has a separate listing, a lovely cozy restaurant downstairs (which, had there been any space in would have got a 4 for ambience, and maybe a different service score), and a sterile bar upstairs. Bar staff there didn’t want to accept a 5e note for a 3.20e transaction, as counting out change would be too much fucking effort for him. Chaos ensued when we walked in the direction of the mass of empty tables - the place was 90% empty - as apparently they’re all reserved. Other member of staff rudely waved us in the direction of a drinkers’ area, and chose to stand there rather than sit on a stool, I certainly had no intention of getting settled there. Had the most boring "fresh" koelsh that I found in the town, it was basically characterless watery pale lager. There was no indication of any other beer being available, so I’m scoring it as if it only had the one. I could be tempted to try the restaurant area in the future, but otherwise the bar’s name is written on the sole of my shoe. Venues like this deserve to go out of business.
Big brewpub close to Heumarkt square. It was already crowded at Wednesday 7:30 pm that we visited it but finally they found a table for us. 3 beers, kolsch, weiss and malzbier (low alcohol), average stuff. Food was good. Service was OK for that busy evening. Typical decoration and ambiance.
Traditional German brauhaus with an extensive menu of local specialities. Usually very busy, but service is quick and attentative. Brewing their own beers, and particularly the Weizen and the Von Mühlen are defintely not to be missed.
