The first Brewpub I visited in Cologne when I was the last summer. I was the at noon so it was very quiet and there were very few people around. Like in most places in Germany, even then there was some smoking, but the place was so large and there so little people it didn’t really bother me. I really liked the look of the interior - it looked like a very authentic German beer-hall. The Kölsch is really decent, but doesn’t really compare to the greatest ones. Good experience overall.
The brewery tap for Päffgen, out near Friesenplatz U-Bahn, a tram 5 ride from Malzmühle in Heumarkt if you are doing the brewery route. Good old-fangled place offering the one world-famous beer and a couple of also-rans. I was not convinced it was uncarbonated though. The Tater minced raw steak with raw egg yolk, anchovy, capers, pickles and paprika is a must for those bent on goading the obsessionality of the health lobby.
Called in en route to Stadtgarten. Great building, excellent atmosphere on a Monday evening was busy and full of conversation but not too full. Serves in my opinion the best Kolsch I’ve tried during this Cologne trip. Food was very good. Service efficient and friendly. Recommended.
