I liked this place. Of course only one beer to choose. Service was pretty good, but did have to wait for refills. Food was pretty good, but not cheap. I would go back 2nd best place I went in the city.
Hopla !
2016 august. Situated further from busy city center, it was nice and quiet during afternoon of sunny saturday. Came there for lunch - good working class stuff - and kolsch - the best of 'em all. Overall experience was ruined by one of Kobes, who brought me a new stange while I haven't finished last one (i was stuffed with meal and already had a few stanges), and when I told this context to him and me being happy with glass still in my hand, he was persistent for a glass of kolsch to stay. Hmm, okay I thought, maybe it's on place or something like that. I just kept it there. But in the end, he counted that one too. Small detail, but damn, just ruined the whole experience.
But regarding what I came there, I found it - the best kolsch in Cologne, so in the world too.
This is a tough place to review. They only have one beer, but it's probably the best kolsch I've had in my life. The interior is beautiful, old-school beer hall. Lots of long tables, etc. Very prompt, efficient, German service. It's a likely scenario to have a few glasses of kolsch. The food looked amazing, but I was much too full to partake.
A beautiful big traditional beer hall which is fairly long and thin, leading to a huge outside area in the back. The atmosphere is great, solid Kolsch keeps on appearing when you need it, and the bratwurst was delicious. What’s not to love?! (Don’t come here to tick though)
Had high expectations given Paffgen is the highest rated Kolsch beer and I have to admit I left disappointed. The beer is below average for the style, and this was not only my opinion, but of the whole group. The kobes were energetic, food was good, atmosphere loud bustling and fun. Authentic straight from the keg poured to your .2dl glass. But again, the beer is wayy overrated.
Really cool place! Paffgen kolsch is wxcellent and the food here is very good if you are seeking a small, authentic beer hall experience. Selection is just one beer...but its the one you want if you come here. Great local vibe.
The brewery tap for Päffgen, out near Friesenplatz U-Bahn, a tram 5 ride from Malzmühle in Heumarkt if you are doing the brewery route. Good old-fangled place offering the one world-famous beer and a couple of also-rans. I was not convinced it was uncarbonated though. The Tater minced raw steak with raw egg yolk, anchovy, capers, pickles and paprika is a must for those bent on goading the obsessionality of the health lobby.
