Just realised that Iíve never got round to entering (most of) my Bermondsey place reviews so here goes. Visited many times. Now that Kernel is no longer open for on-site drinking this is arguably the number one spot of the Bermondsey run. But go early as it gets absolutely rammed by mid afternoon and thatís no fun at all. The wait to get served can be long and the wait for the toilet, should you need it, even longer. Itís a basic in-brewery tap room set up - a bit better appointed than some in the area, a bit less well appointed than others. The requirement to pay a deposit on your glass is rather irksome because you need to queue up again to redeem it. The beers are excellent and the staff are well-informed and efficient. Usually one or other (or both) of the owners / brewers are in attendance. They just sell their own beers and have about ten on tap with a similar number in bottles to drink in or take away. If you have designs on being a Brew By Numbers completist youíd be well advised to visit regularly because youíll get all the new releases (of which there are a lot). If you donít they might pop up anywhere and theyíre easy to miss because you simply arenít in the right place at the right time. Iím not really a completist and donít do the Bermondsey run very often these days simply because itís too damned popular and Iím not that keen on an early start. I usually find that I pick up most of the beers one way or another without really trying anyway.

I guess a fairly typical railway arch set up. I went very early so it was still quiet, all very relaxed and friendly with everyone including the guys brewing in the back happy for a chat. Their beers are pretty good too.

Next down the street, also located under the railway. Much more activity here, as consumption is allowed. Didnít have time to crack the numbers code. Lines for the taps came and went, but service was pretty brisk.

Well, you gotta love these railway arches... Quite busy on an early Saturday afternoon early September, even though rainy, with a few stag parties and groups doing the Bermondsey Beer Mile. This still has a genuine feel to it, as far as possible from your mega-macro-lager as you can get.

The BM anchor point now that Kernel is not tapping anymore. This place can get busy with lines out the door but earlier in the day itís chilled. Not a fan of the glass policy, means queuing up again to get your money back, I understand it but itís irksome. The portaloos are grim as others have pointed out, raised to the power of 10 with sun on them. There used to be internal toilets but I guess itís just too busy for them now. So itís a mixed bag here - trick is to get here early.

My wife and I arrived just after midday on a Saturday, and there were still quite a few seats - we managed to get a sofa in the doorway that rather nicely caught the sun. Bar staff were all very friendly & the place had a nice happy, chilled vibe to it - think weíd have both been quite happy crashing there for the whole afternoon! Half a dozen of the breweryís latest beers were on tap. plus (my non-drinking wife was pleased to note) also some sour cherry non-alcoholic fizz on tap too - a nice touch. There were also a few of their bottled brews available (thereís a list on the bar). Otherís have noted the glass deposit - you can either get a refund on this or get one of their bottles to take away instead! There was a stall next door inviting you to taste this salty loins; this appeared to be a food offering rather than an unusual sexual practice! The only downside was that the portaloos were truly grim already - considering this was early in the day they must be un-usable by close of play. Otherwise a pretty pleasant place; Iíd return there again although Iíd make sure I arrived early again; by the time we left just after 1pm it was standing room only.

Stop number 4 on the beer mile. The busiest of the places we visited with a long queue to get served and another to use the toilet. Beer quality is decent, but the lack of flights was disappointing. A must do on the beer mile, but too busy to stay for long.
