ContemplateBeer  (153) Louisville, Kentucky | April 29, 2017
Overview: Cafe Lou Lou is an unlikely veteran of Louisville’s craft beer scene; the type of place more known to locals as a restaurant, but with a beer list that puts it above the "family restaurant" norm. The place is smaller than you’d guess from the outside, and has a DIY aesthetic to it’s booths, multi-colored walls, etc. You’ll see what I mean if you decide to visit. It’s location places it near some Frankfort Ave. spots- Crescent Hill Craft House and The Irish Rover, for instance- and relatively close to Mellow Mushroom and the St. Matthews area.

Service was Joe, who was pretty prompt with refills, etc. Instead of guessing at what was on tap, he retrieved an out of date beer menu, some of which seemed to be on. At least he didn’t guess at it, so kudos for that. Selection has always been solid here, with the occasional pleasant surprise thrown in- had purportedly fresh Gumballhead on, and Three Floyds 99 Necron, which I haven’t seem elsewhere around town. Food is typically pretty tasty, but at times a bit highly priced- the $11 gumbo was very good, but so small as to warrant a further entree. Then again, the meatball sandwich, for a dollar more, is enough food to feed an NFL lineman. Solid options for the kids as well. My beer was $8, which is kinda high, even for a Three Floyds beer. No smaller pour options have ever been available in my experience.

PROS: Pleasant surprises on the beer list from time to time. CONS: Nothing glaring; pour options would be nice; maybe a bit too IPA-ified in the selection, but that’s lots of places right now. OVERALL: Mostly a locals place with the occasional surprise to be had. Worth a stop for place tickers, but otherwise it’s not a destination of any kind. Parking on-site.

Dedicated free parking right in front. Service was good around 2 on a Friday. Descent tap selection, unknown bottle list. The meatball calzone is fantastic. Pricing seemed going rate for the quality. I hope to go back.

not a real big area but large enough for several tables. was busy when we got there and we were the last ones to leave. asked the server for a beer list which was out dated just from the tap handles i seen. settled on a west sixth and finished with a founders porter. our server (Kat) relatively new was quite good and charming. she paced us and kept up with our orders. the food was very good. several pasta dishes to choose from mine had a good amount of spice no complaints, all decently priced. the beer $5/pint was good to. the actual bar area is a big on the small side but gives you that homey feel. capped the night with some bread pudding which was quite tasty.

quite unassuming but a nice place. quality selection over quantity. Awesome service! the food has never disappointed, but the menu is limited. Great specials on Wednesdays if you like wine.
