Wonderfull place, hidden away from Strøget, the main walking street in the capital, just opposite the old Berlingske Tidende newspaper building, next to Cafe Ketchup - retro decor with a real, old english pub atmosphere and ambience - the policy is no tv (apart from very special, big sporting events), and no music, and finially NON-SMOKING !
This was a decision made by staff and management as Charlie’s is legally allowed to be a smoking pub, but when the clientele began to change dramatically, it became, for a short period just a smoking bar and the requests for Carlsberg and Tuborg increased dramatically.
New non-smoking policy since 01 April 2008, and already a big success. Friendly, informative staff. The staff are certainly characters and the place is managed by a jolly decent chap, Martin (Me! lol). Andy the technical maestro is extremely knowledgeable and can answer any questions you might have connected to the technical operations of the pub.
It is the sister pub to the Wharf in Aalborg, Charlies Pubs are owned by Iain Russell and he has certainly done a good job at establishing the importance of real ale pubs here in Denmark.
As an expat living in CPH this is the premier place to socialise and drink real ale in a real pub atmosphere. Busy all the time, quieter on Sunday afternoons though, there is a regular turnover of cask ales from a wide selection of UK breweries. The attention to detail ensures a Cask Marque hangs proudly on the wall. Prices are very reasonable for the centre of town.
An english bar which is more English than one in England.
Charlie’s certainly holds its Cask Marque with pride. The beer selection is top notch here where you can tell each tap is looked after properly which would make any brewery proud. There are beers for all.
The staff make you feel welcome and know their beer. Although maybe some might seem to be sarcastic you quickly find out it is the charm of the place, which really gives it that English feel.
The bar itself is well kept and a lovely little place to take friends, or be by yourself. In the summer the front window opens up which extends the bar into the street.
The regulars of the bar are also most welcoming, and you can enjoy charming and funny conversations with them all.
All in all this bar is one of the best and I would recommend it to anyone.
Being a regular at Charles, this is a must see place for people who want to try out Cask Ales as it should be served - and for that Charlie’s Bar have earned themselves a "Cask Marque Award" which there are only four of outside England. The selection of beer varies from tiny English breweries over experimental brews to large breweries like Harvey’s, Greene King, Shepherd Neame, Harvestouns and others. During the weekdays only 2-3 casks are one - but from Thursdays to Sundays you will see all six ever changing pumps being used. The staff is great and the regulars (me among others) are really nice. At Charlie’s you’re not a stranger for a long period of time, as when crowded, you might need to share you table with others.
