Odd building but what you’d expect from Dark Horse. 6-8 taps usually at least one or two not available in bottle. The pizza is good. Michelle from what I gather is the only bartender they have but she is both friendly and knowledgeable.
A nice little cozy place to enjoy some good beer and food. They only had 5 beers on tap, but the selection was still decent enough. The food was standard pub fair, but very fairly priced and pretty good as well. The atmosphere and decour was very laid back. There must have been 1,000 beer mugs hanging from the walls and ceiling. Definately worth a stop if you are in the area.
From afar seems quit like a small shack that would one would see on an x-files episode in which a computer was autonomously controlling the world. Inside, you have mugs hung everywhere, literally. Friendly servers. small rustic ambiance. Dark horse brews on draft only about 4 or 5 I recall. a nice stop if you are doing the Michigan circuit. A little out of the way.
This is what your prototypical local bar would be if it were also a top notch brewery. The walls are covered in mugs to the point where I don’t know if they have room for anything else. The walls are covered in bumpered stickers and other random stuff. It’s low key and proud of it.
The selection was limited with only five beers on tap at the time - amber, raspberry, Whiskey Richard and two others. I don’t know if that is always the case but it covered a nice range of styles. Service was nice and my beer came in a tulip instead of a shaker.
Be sure to stop by here if you are driving from Kalamazoo to Ann Arbor/Detroit. It’s worth the ten minute drive off I-90.
One of the highlights of a two-week road trip. Great people on both sides of the bar... down-to-earth and super friendly. Brewer Trent even gave me a quick tour of the brewhouse (thanks, man). I thought the atmosphere was just terrific, but it probably wouldn’t appeal to the mainstream. It’s kinda like if Satan built a diner/beer garden. My wife and I both loved our visit and we’re looking forward to next time as long as we can find someplace close to stay the night. I hear there’s a B&B within walking distance...
Two visits, summer 2004 and just before Christmas 2006. Surprised I forgot to rate this before but oh well. Really cool, comfortable ambiance, something between a small traditional midwestern tavern and a hippie haven; lots of anti-Bush propaganda around; something about that and the size and friendliness of the place makes it feel like a mirror-image of Calumet in Chilton WI. But I digress. Terrific, simple food (pizzas and sanwiches) mostly solid to very good beer, unfiltered and very natural, busy, cluttered look to the place that makes it seem even smaller, and just great super-friendly service. Everyone in the place when I visited yesterday but me was a local, but the bartender made me feel like I belonged. Cheap, too. Probably not the very best beer in Michigan (and my one complaint is that on neither visit I’ve made was the selection really exciting) but definitely one of the must-visit places.
Nice place to visit. Not too fqar out of the Detroit area, that you couldn’t make an evening out of it. Pretty good food, pizza’s, bar type stuff. Good beer. Not a huge selection of beers, but enough to keep you occupied. Will come back for sure.
We stopped at the Dark Horse on our way to our main stop at Bell’s in Kalamazoo. Not much in the ambience area but we were there for the beer, the service was prompt and friendly enough. Selection was average I would say with bottled items to choose from as well. Most of the beers we tried were all well made but only a couple really stood out, notably their staple IPA. If you happen to be in the area or live nearby stop in, otherwise I would say it’s not worth a very long drive.
very friendly local microbrewery that i could see myself making regular trips there if i lived in the area. friendly wait staff and a very downhome feeling in the bar. When i was there, they didn’t have anything speical on tap other than the great special black bier, which was fantastic. I was hoping for some of the stouts, but i guess i will have to wait till winter time.
