Twin floored traditional pub with a good emphasis on cask ale. There’s a long row of wickets along the bar on its inner wall, although I only found one new beer from a full selection on my visit and ironically it was one produced in the Yorkshire town I live in! Fairly quiet on a late Tuesday afternoon in June.

Nice décor, mostly involving posters, eight cask ales on, probable ticks available on a regular basis. Good.

Located just of the Strand this place has always been fairly quiet when I’ve visited on a weekday evening. Service good, but atmosphere a little lacking. Have awarded a 3 in this respect as at least it’s not a bad atmosphere a la rough spoons! Good range of well kept cask ales - 9 or 10 sticks on offer. Worth popping by if in the area or on a crawl but not a destination bar! Update - visit on 10/10/13. Fairly busy for 4.30pm and not one table free inside, but not overly packed. 7 or 8 casks available, nothing from what I’d call the newer/more exciting brewers but a decent enough selection and some new rates for me.

A cosy and atmospheric pub with a decent selection of real ales on offer. They had a couple of beers from Red Squirrel when I visited and it went down very well. I believe the house beer is from Nethergate.

This place is maddeningly inconsistent. Sometimes you’ll find a nice selection of Crouch Vale beers available, at other times they’ll have a bunch of crap on cask. Unfortunately my last visit here was pretty underwhelming. Apart from Crouch Vale Brewers Gold, they had a bunch of boring bitters from Shepherd Neame and Everards on. Unfortunately the condition of the beer isn’t always great. Otherwise, the ambiance here is pretty spare. The food is bog standard pub fare (frozen beef patties for their burgers etc). The value’s fine for central London. Overall, this place is worth a look in if you’re on a crawl, but it’s not a destination pub. Temper your expectations.

I like the place. Good real ales in a very good condition. What can you ask for more? (2009, 2011).

Nothing particularly spectacular about the pub itself but the beer range is good, with an excellent chance of some scoops. Seven handpumps usually include Crouch Vale Brewers Gold and the house beer, which is a rebadge of Nethergate IPA. Expect it to be busy with lawyers after work hours during legal term time. Closed at weekends. Some other decent pubs in the immediate vicinity add to the attraction.

This place LOOKS fantastic. Lots of granny chairs and benches fitted into cosy corners, giving it a very home like feeling. The beer, well, that’s something else. The casks were nothing special and the drafts are all Heineken, Kronenbourg, Stella, ... Didn’t try the food, but saw a lot of plates coming out of the kitchen, they didn’t look too bad. The staff doesn’t give a rat’s ass about you or your interest in beer, they just want you to order quick, pay quick and be out of their way. Except when you’re a regular. Saw one of the suits grabbing some waitress ass and he got away with it. :p A good place to chill down after a day of walking in the area, but not exactly a must visit beer spot.
