Close to the station, so no hills to worry about. Quite small (cosy). Excellent beer choice (as would be expected), focus naturally on the Dark Star Range with well sourced options both on tap and in bottle.
Slightly grungy (which is good in my opinion) beer bar with a couple of benches outside to soak up the summer evening sun. Bar staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Tap selection covered a variety of styles, so was plenty to choose from. Prices were OK (some beers obviously more expensive) but possibility to buy thirds means that you can taste many beers even on a budget. Really liked the place, would definitely come back.
Visited many times over the years, most recently in August 2016. The Evening Star has around for many years and, whilst the competition in Brighton is a lot hotter than it once was I’d still say this is an essential stop, and convenient as first or last from/to the station. As well as the Dark Star casks there are several guests, some interesting craft kegs and some decent bottles in the fridge. Unashamedly unpretentious with fairly basic, but welcoming, decor. Venerable but still doing the business well.
Visited in the evening, the place was very busy. Luckily we were allowed to share a table with a friendly chap sitting by himself. Traditional pub, very local feel to it. Interesting selection, good mix of Dark Star casks and modern UK craft beers. Also some interesting bottles as well. I’d consider it a must visit.
The bar is quite small, but cozy inside and it looks great from the outside. It has a big table on it’s patio, so you can have a pint open air if you want. The selection is nice. Dark Star casks, ciders, American and Belgian import and British bottled beers to choose from. Although it can easily be crowded, I still recommend it because of the beers and the ambiance.
Visited on a Saturday afternoon in November 2015. Single roomed pub a couple of mins from the station. Lots of wooden benches for seating. A good range of both cask and key beers. Prices are pretty good and you’ll always pick up something new here. It’s been similar for the past 20 years or so. A great venue and if you have to go to one place in Brighton then this is handy and a must do.
Good beer selection, and those we tried were in good condition. Friendly service & clientele. Well worth a visit if in Brighton. Visted lunchtime 31.3.15

Visited the Evening Star when I was over at Olly & Mia’s place during my RBESG - GBBF beer holiday in August 2014. Nice warm and cozy pub with some nice cask beers on tap and also some in bottle. Had a very good time here and will certainly visit again if I ever get the chance.
I love this pub, first of all it’s a proper pub rather than a bar, with a fantastic selection from all my favourite English breweries - Dark Star of course, but also Thornbridge, Brodies, Magic Rock, Kernel etc... Perfectly kept cask beers, you’ll never taste a more delicious pint of Hophead, and a good selection of bottles and Keg (although to be honest the cask beer is good enough that I do’t tend to delve further...). Friendly, lively, close to the station, perfect!
