I visited at the end of April 2010. My first impression was of a loud barn sized room open at one side with a rail for smokers. Michigan has enacted a smoking ban since then so that may have changed. By myself, I found a nice single table in the corner just by the windows overlooking the brewkettles and managed to order after a few minutes. Starting with a pint of their quite respectable porter and a sandwich (the "Castro", superb), I progressed to a pint of oatmeal stout (silky and satisfying) and finished with a snifter of Old Curmudgeon. The staff were rotating, asking if I needed anything at regular intervals, polite and prompt.
This place is worth a visit!
Founders rocks! There are so many brewpubs you wander into hoping to find their renowned beers - and they are never on tap. In visiting on River Run weekend, I found Double Trouble, Kentucky Breakfast Stout, Szrp of Doom and Death all on tap, along with many other great choices.
Service is great too - packed to the rafters after the race, an unscheduled bus tour came in. The place was now swamped. But the staff there covers all tables and areas - and never missed a beat. And after being ruthlessly gouged by Goose Island and Piece in Chicago, it was great to be able to drink beer at reasonable prices for the "good stuff".
Large open space. How to rate service. Frequently asked if aa beer or water or soda was desired, but did have to order and pick-up food from the window, in our case way across the bar. But that having been said, if lived in Grand Rapids, would frequent frequently.
Founders makes some of my favorite beers and I finally got to stop in for a visit. We went on a Monday night which was packed. $2-3 pints on all their drafts will do that. For how busy it was the service was amazing. As long as you know what your getting next you will always have something to drink in front of you. The only food we got was the beer cheese dip which was delicious.
I visited Grand Rapids to see my friends band play, so we decided to go have a few pints here before the show. I had been to Founders Fest last year, but they had the inside closed, so we checked it out. The beer, as always, was incredible. We tried the KBS, and Canadian variant, as well as hand of doom ,and double trouble. It was nothing short of epic. The bartenders were a bit swamped, as it was a busy night, but overall service was good. We even went back after the concert for one last pint before bed. I had a great time in GR, and will definitely be returning. Cheers!
Thoroughly enjoyed Founders - loved the beer selection, prices ($3-$6) and service (very attentive). For food, the sandwiches were huge and very delicious, inexpensive appetizers to share ($2-$3 for both the large shelled peanuts and pretzels with cheese dip). Enjoyed the Froot Kissile (that’s how they spell fruit there) and many samples. Definitely a must to visit and as a bonus is only 1/2 mile from HopCat.
Good food, but $7 for a samich is a bit much. Good beer, smoke free is nice, summer nights they open the doors to the patio. Played here in a band so getting a band discount made it much more reasonable.
Seventh stop (third of day 2) of the Michigan trip on 1/30/10. Large bar/cafeteria environment with the brewery clearly visible through a door and glass panes. Didn’t get any food, but the beers were fantastic. Stuff they don’t bottle that they had on this day included Frangelic Stout (holy crap, was it good!), Oatmeal Stout, Slappy Sappy Bastard and Black Biscuit. Service was witty and friendly (all of them). Visiting a brewer I have so much respect for and having the place meet my lofty expectations, pretty close to a religious experience. Between this place and HopCat, I think GR is my new favorite beer city.
Their beer is epic. No exaggeration. Awesome selection and just excellent beer from the double trouble IPA to Breakfast stout. Try them all you will not be disappointed. The bar staff is very knowledgeable their beers very well. Great sandwiches and bar food too. Just an all around excellent place to hang out.
Visited here in August 2009. Bartender was knowledgeable and friendly, service was good, sandwich was amazing, and I sampled some awesome beers, including 4 barrel aged ones. Mmmmm. Can’t wait to go back!
