Simply a great, great bar. The ambience and service is top notch. The draft beers are mostly all brewed out the back and are excellent quality. Their beers have won many awards. You can get pizza out the back, fresh cooked in a stone oven on thursday/friday nights. They have many festivals highlighting Irish craft brewers. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Altogether a wonderful place to visit.
I really enjoyed this place. Very original...great feel to the place. The people are very welcomimg. The night I was there they had somebody visiting that was making wood fired pizza which they insisted I would like even after I said I was from NYC...they were right! The beers were very good compared to the syles I had been finding in Ireland during this visit (hard for me to find the hoppy beers I love from back home). I would highly recommend this place to anyone in the area...even worth a special trip.
(Visited 11/2012): Franciscan Well is located on North Mall right near the water across from Bachelor’s Quay. Parking is available along the street.
The entry is through an arch and down a short alley. The interior opens to table seating with a bar in the rear. The space is split level with more seating on the upper tier and a beer garden in the back. Dark red and worn wood motif, with hanging Christmas lights. Brewery tanks are located right behind the bar.
The brewpub features 7 house beers, all of which are available in a sampler. These included an Irish Ale, ESB, Pale, Hefe, Lager and Kölsch on our visit. The beers were all average to decent, with no real standouts. Two guest taps as well. There are around 25 bottled beers available from brewers like Sierra Nevada, La Chouffe and St. Peters.
Service by the bartender on our visit was friendly and knowledgeable. He also made recommendations on other places to find craft beer in the region. The brewpub also does regular festivals, and there are a bunch of posters on the wall from past events.
This place does not serve food to my knowledge.
Overall this is a worthwhile visit if for the simple fact that there are so few actual brewpubs in Ireland.
Very quiet on a lunchtime, opening is 1pm. A good selection of the breweries own beers, a Blonde, Pale Ale, Stout, lager etc. a good choice if you’re not looking for the traditional oirish (I.e tourist) experience
September 2009 - Visited early on a Sunday evening. With its huge outside sitting area, this place was a nice break from the routine in Ireland, offering 5 solid German-style house beers. The lads at the bar were friendly, and the crowd was an interesting mix of European tourists and young, hop Corksters. With no food of their own, they ordered pizza for us from down the street, a good pie, but pricey at 20 Euros. Fun spot.
Nice layout with both outdoor and indoor seating. Attractive copper DME brewhouse with 4 fementers, 4 conditioning tanks, 2 brite beer tanks and 3 serving vessels. Outdoor patio with multiple covered and uncovered areas. Smoker usually hang out in the uncovered areas. Glass-walled brewhouse .
Brewhouse tour reveals imported malts, 2-roller mill, 6-head manual bottle filler, and 4-head keg filler. Since being taken over my Molsen-Coors, new production will begin near old Beamish brewery in Cork.
Popul;arity now increasing for beers that include Rebel Red, Jameson Stout, Jack Daniels bourbon, Friar Weisse, and Pale Ale.
Nice patio and semi-late night bar. Sucessful brewer. Wosh them well in the corporate worls.
