We visited The Highbury Vaults, Saturday 4th February 2017, we came here as Beerd across the road had yet to open and whilst this was also a 12 íoíclock opening, itís doors were already open at 11:50, so we wandered in. The Highbury Vaults is located at the top of St Michaels Hill in the North West of the centre, near the University. I would say itís about 3/4 mile walk from the immediate centre, however please also note that St Michaels Hill is actually quite steep and there is no public transport that comes up here.

Inside it is wonderful, itís old, creaky and appears very much unspoilt. There is lots of old dark wood everywhere and loads of nooks and crannies. There is a tiny front bar (turn right immediately on entering) this would be heaving with about 8-10 people in here, itís so tiny, note also that not all of the taps are on here. Come back out of here and continue into the main part of the pub via a small room first of all and then you get to the main bar area on the RH side in the middle of the pub. There are nick nacks everywhere, an old ticking clock, and most bizarre of all a little tiny model train that runs along the entire back wall running constantly to and fro between the front and back of pub through little tunnels through each dividing wall into each room. There looks to be a very nice enclosed garden at the rear and further alcoves and seating areas back here.

Beer choice was primarily from the Youngs stable with addition of one or two others we had a Teignworthy Sea Dog which was very good. I really liked this place, it was really quiet but as mentioned itíd only just opened. Itís a bit of a trek to get here but with Beerd opposite and a couple of pubs en route up the hill itís worth it.

Highbury Vaults is a must visit for the superb atmosphere and the wonderful warren of small rooms and cubicles seemingly untouched by time. I loved it, although the serious beer ticker might find the beer selection disappointing. Itís at the top of St Michaelís Hill, which tugs at the leg muscles walking down let alone up (especially on an icy day), but well worth the trek in my view. (Visited 17 December 2014).

Beautiful, cool and charming traditional boozer, very popular with local hipster dudes. Love layout and gardens. Beers are Youngs and pedestrian, but who cares.

An OK range of beers, a nice beer garden, shady and green. Limited food available. Well known destination.

A good drinking pub, with some food (although I would never rush to eat there, my Dad is always very enthusiastic about their chilli nachos). But it is something of a classic Bristol drinking destination, and rightfully so. Always busy, but somehow always with a table to squeeze on to with your friends, a decent selection of beer and a great atmosphere means itís always worth spending time here.

Long established real ale pub, that used to be owned by the former Smiles brewery, before ending up in the hands of Youngs. Aside from their beers, does Brains SA and several guest beers, often from Teignworthy. Pleasant atmosphere with several rooms, two bars and a heated outdoor garden.
