There is a good reason why this place has been in the Top 10 of bars in Holland since the beginning of time. Everything you expect from a local, special beer events and very knowledgeable staff. A beer of the month and and endless list of bottled and draft beers (as well as whiskies and wines). I noticed some of the regulars even have their own glasses and their favourite beer is kept at a preferred temperature. Never seen this anywhere before!

We visited De Bonte Koe on Friday 30th September 2016, this was our last beer stop of the day before finishing our cycle ride back to Edam. De Bonte Koe is located in the Koemarkt near the other cafés listed on this site, the Koemarkt is on the south eastern edge of the centre of town at about 4 ’o’ clock if considered the centre as clock face.

Its an attractive bar, red brick, traditional Dutch looking, with an outside seating area covered by a large awning. I also believe that this is one of the ABT bars in the Netherlands so you can be assured of a good choice and that the beer will be well kept. Inside the bar is immediately ahead located on the LH wall, there is seating off to the RH side and to the rear. The rear had lots of glass fronted wooden cabinets which had bottles and other nic-naks in, from where we sat this area has the appearance of an old pharmacy. Lots of wood and a nice soft lighting in here made this a very nice cosy place to sit. The music playing in the background amused me a little as did the landlord who happily sang quietly along to those tracks he knew. So a typical blast from the past selection with Alphaville ’Big in Japan’, Foreigner ’Your as Cold as Ice’, Phil Collins ’Against all Odds’, Cock Robin ’Remember the Promise you Made’, sad to say I got them all without any shazam assistance.

We’d noticed a large marquee immediately outside the café on the Koemarkt and as we sat here inside we saw many of the staff getting changed into traditional Bavarian costume of Leiderhosen and Drindl, then customers were coming in all kitted out similarly. We spoke to the landlady who said it was their annual October Fest this weekend starting at 18:00 tonight, you paid €75 each for an evening of entertainment (oompah band etc), food and beer as much as you can drink (about thirty October Fest beers to choose from I believe) . It looked great fun I must say and we vowed to go along next year.

We must have had 3-4 rounds of beers here as we watched proceedings for the October Fest’, amongst the beers we enjoyed were Mashing Pumpkins, Lagunitas IPA, Thornbridge Squatters Ale, Arthurs Legacy 05 Jack the RIPA. We loved this bar, we’d been meaning to come here for a few years now when staying at the campsite in Landsmeer. This place had a great atmosphere and was a great find, staff were exceptionally friendly and professional and knew their stuff.

Visited on a Saturday evening, before dinner time. Reasonably spaceous bar, typical Dutch brown café/beer café interior with lots of beer memorabilia, stone jugs, ornaments. Looks nice. Very soft music if any at all. Good service, decent bottle list with mostly the usual suspects, tap list is OK but prices were a bit steep for rural Holland if you ask me, all between €3.50-4.-, even for something like De Koninck. Would visit more often if I lived nearby though.

Great beerpub in Purmerend. The taplist is rather easy, but the bottled selection is very interesting. They have extra bottles if you ask for it. Staff is nice and interested. One of the best beer pubs in North Holland "boven het IJ" (so outside the Amsterdam/Haarlem area).

Excellent reasonably sized bar, easily the best in Purmerend, with a very impressive draft list and pretty good bottled one.
