RE-RATE (11/08) the last two times I have visited, they have really toned down the music. Additionally, both the food and service have been great. Certainly near the top of KC beer places. Upped rating to 78.
ORIGINAL RATING (03/07) I had read about this place in local media, and on Beer Fly, and had fairly high expectations going in. Kansas City is a bit short on beer bars, and I thought Grinder’s could be one. The beer list was nice, certainly better than most places you go, though nothing way out there. I would call this a bar with a nice beer list, rather than a true beer bar. Service was OK, took quite awhile for me to be served at the bar for lunch, and there were 4 servers on, and maybe 8 customers in the place. I actually had to ask for help. The music was up way too loud, and not to sound like an old timer, but I hate having to shout my order across the bar when the place is 95% empty. The food had been reviewed elsewhere as extraordinary, and I found it only a bit above average. I had the Philly cheesesteak and it was tasty but not exceptional. 72
76 = ★★★ (Worth the visit, must for locals, and visitors with time)
I only use the total score, not the component parts.

Visited with beastiefan2k - interesting place that has a slightly punk/hippy/alternative lifestyle kind o vibe to it - doubly interesting because it has a large backyard with a stage where they inexplicably convince nationally-recognized bands to perform, so not only is it a bar and restaurant, it is also a music venue - so so selection of regional beer on tap - nothing too exciting, but some quality product - they serve all the beer in chilled glasses, which is a big turn off for me - food was decent, but nothing that made me wish I could return - service was a little inattentive, but not to the point where it was an annoyance - a decent spot.
Visited in the middle of the week. Nice selection of bottles and taps. Food was above average with decent prices. Nothing stands out, but well worth the time to visit. It is near a lot of other places of interest.
A dive with a vision. Plenty of unusual beers on tap when we visited, to go with unusual waitresses who were unusually inked. We had a bacon-cream cheese-chive pizza with a pile of tater tots and chili in the middle of it. It was the right thing to do. Narrow-room bar with plenty of strange art and other oddities on the walls and elsewhere. A comfortable, casual joint that would be a regular haunt if I lived in KC. Cheers to the server who let me snap a photo of her Vader and Boba Fett tatts.
Been her a few times in my few years in Kansas. Nothing I search out. Slightly punk/hippy/alternative lifestyle kind o vibe to it but a more hip/cool feel to the place next door. Coll that they have a large backyard with a stage where they inexplicably convince nationally-recognized bands to perform, so not only is it a bar and restaurant, it is also a music venue. Decent selection of regional beer on tap - nothing too exciting, but some quality product. food was decent, they go for the pizza and sandwich vibe. Come if you want but nothing special.

Funky is definitely the word to be used to describe Grinder’s. Add great pizza and good beer and this place is a winner. The fact that the brewers from Boulevard hang out in here should be enough to recommend it.
An interesting beer spot in KC, alternative is the word .. punks and hippies, with a good dose of drunk dikes. my tattooed covered waitress was friendly, but my first 3 choices of beer were all sold out, so basically this place was a pizza place, no more. but the pizza i had was amazing and sandwich my mom had was also amazing. i enjoyed my stop- but not having a good beer with dinner killed the score.. and the bathroom was disgusting and full of flies...
I liked the looks of this place, very hole in the wall like! You could just smell the grease, and the night we went they had Cake playing out back so the music was good too. The young lady who served me a beer impressed me as she seemed to care quite a bit about my order despite the fact that the whole bar was packed, I was pretty impressed. The beer selection was nice, a few interesting things on tap... of course plenty of Boulevard. I got a Southampton Altbier and the wife had a Bells Cherry stout. Pretty nice place.
Awesome place! A cool little bar with an awesome outdoor view of the skyline. Beer selection was very good. Service was good, knowledgeable about the beer, but could seem a little busy at times to help a non-regular. Seemed to be a lot of regulars there. The food kicked ass. The pizza with smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers rocked! I really enjoyed this place.
