met one of these guys at horecabeurs 2013, where he gave me some very nice info . so i wanted to visit the place, even though i’ve had all their beers .
interior is AWSOME . very clean, yet not a ’hospital’ feel . still cosy ! we sat at the bar , where we could look outside to the most beautifull glass door, plants and a very nice arranged ’terrace’ . toilets are mouths ( rolling stones type !)
we got some great info from one of the people here . we discovered he waqs ’ onley’ a student , so what must the real brewery-people be like than ?
calm, good prices. onley 5 beers are brewed here, unfortunatly , but i WOULD recomend going here anyways . to take a rest from ticking , and to drink a nice beer in a nice enviroment
Easy to get to & not too far from the city centre. Located next to the water, inside is very interesting. Modern and beautifully designed building. Lots of work went into this place & it looks beautifully. Be sure to check out the Rolling Stones themed urinals. Service was good, the servers appeared to be all job students. Still despite this one of them was very well informed about what they do, lots of explanation was given upon request. They have booklets with info available and they answered all of our questions. As far as beer selection goes, they have all of their beers available which I think are nice – not stellar but def. solid enough – most of them are both draft & bottled. Prices are good. They also sell their beers to go. You can get a tasting tray which is rare in Belgium. Food is averagely prized, I saw lots of stuff with Gruut cheese & lots of dishes with beer including some I have never seen before with beer. I didn’t eat here. Overall staff probably rotates a lot so services might vary but our was very good. All of the breweries beers are available, good prized & great interior. I am very puzzled by the other low ratings, no idea what you guys were expecting but this place offered everything that you might expect from a place like this in my opinion.
I risk to be ridiculed by all those who just KNOW that the brewery moved, but for those who (like me) do not know, well, the brewery moved to a new location quite a bit of a way from the original one where bare walls and faded signs on the windows remind a desperate visitor that the brewery is gone but there in no hint to tell that the new address is Rembert Dodoensdreef 1. It is a peculiar large hall stuffed with extraordinary, if a bit junky pieces of furniture and memorabilia. Luckily, a brewing kit is well visible and all smells tell that the place is real. So are the beers, not to everyone´s taste but well worth a try.
Seriously worrying that Joris and I rate this one exactly the same. We must both be wrong. There is something distinctly off beat about this converted gaslight production plant. You can sit on top of the brewing kit. And race plastic ducks down the indoor rivulet. Easiest directions I can think of are that when you reach the city end of Brabantdam (as in Trappistenhuis and grotty red light district) take Kortedagsteeg across the canal bridge and it is on your left.
The first real brewpub in Gent. Brewery fully visible (and working on my visit!), marvelously integrated in the old building, whose adaptation to its new destination is truly remarkable. Annick Desplenter, brewer-owner supervises, directs, serves and animates the place. Three beers available at the moment of writing, exhibiting impressionant heads for first tries. Glasswork both nice and gimmicky, in both 25 and 33cl versions. Nice older building, with outside quiet patio, and terrace in front. 2.5hl plant, 4hl storage capacity. Situated in the (students)centre of Gent, yet quiet and pretty hard to find. Bread made with the malts and dregs, sourdough method, small snacks, in the Gent way and dialect. Well worth searching out - I’ve visited similar establisments that were WAY worse... Recent visit proved that the place is closed all August. Worse, there’s no mention of this at all on the website, that clearly needs some updating!
Update 22/11/11: Had stoverij (meat and beer stew) with fries and a salad. Decent good food, enjoyed my lunch here. Just doubting whether they make the stew themselves. Also: the tables and chairs are rearranged and they got new lamps, so it’s a bit more cosy, but it still has that industrial feel to it.<br/<
The brewery feels a bit cold to me, probably because of the tables and chairs arranged as if in a school cafeteria. All in line and pretty full for the surface. Although I’ve never seen all tables and chairs in use. The beer selection is of course limited to their own beers, by now a selection of 5. You can get small samples if you want to try all of the beers. Annick is always doing some small talk if she is the one serving. Other waiters are more detached. Often you need some patience before being served, even if the place is completely empty. It’s nice to get a look at the brewing installation.
