Pretty large brew pub in the middle of NYC. Most of their beers aren’t that amazing besides possibly farmer johns. Service is decent but not great and the food isn’t that overpriced considering its location. You can sample all 6 of their year round beers and 2 of the seasonals for 17 bucks or so (5oz each).
Nice location, nice atmosphere. Bartender was nice and the sampler wasn’t a bad deal. As for beer goes, their lighter beers had a an astringent quality that left a bad aftertaste. The darker beers (esp. Farmer Jon’s) were better. Probably not going to come back here, since I’ve had basically all their beers now.
It’s a Heartland Brewery, enough said. I don’t come here for awesome brews, or service. The beer selection doesn’t change often enough, and they are never really that good! The food is average/ above average, price is not too overboard.
I’ve been here quite often, but not as much as the other Heartlands. The ambiance is one of the nice, an attractive establishment, with the tanks left over from the days when heartland brewed its own beer. The service is prompt, polite, and overall good. The staff is generally knowledgable about the beers they serve. I tend to like Heartland’s brews, although they are seldom among the very best, the beers they serve are eclectic, and greatly varied. Their selection is decent. While their selection could be more varied, it is better than other Heartland establishments. The food here is very good, and reasonably priced. The value is decent for this type of establishment in Manhattan. Definitely worth stopping for lunch.
I was at the Empire State Building pub, crowded, but in mid afternoon I got a seat at the bar. Speedy and friendly service, while the beers are rather run of the mill. The sampler tray is nicely priced.
Sure, there are better pubs, but it’s worth a visit. With their locations, it’s not a detour from where a tourist is going anyway...
Combine this with the Ginger Man a few blocks away.
Yet another NYC beer place I’ve been to a million times and not rated - this is probably my favorite Heartland location - it’s roomy inside, and quite laid back compared to some of the other locations - it’s location in Union Square is a plus, as the other locations are in mostly touristy parts of town - the food and beer is the same as the other locations, obviously (ie. overpriced and mostly lackluster) - if you must go to Heartland, then come here, but trust me, no one must go to heartland.
It was packed when I visited on a Friday evening and very difficult to find somewhere to sit unless you’re eating. But nevertheless I persevered and was glad I did when I eventually got a table and a seasonal taster including 7 of their beers for only $14.95! It’s a great deal if you want to get a taste of everything they’ve got to offer. Decent place and the food looked good -very varied menu including both bar food and a proper restaurant menu- although we didn’t eat here.
Went to the Union Square location on a Saturday afternoon and I was very impressed. Prices were a little high, even for NYC, but a great atmosphere, especially for hanging out or watching sports. The 6 or 8 beer sampler was really a great way to get the most variety for your buck and the food was OK. Location is also a plus, right on the park. I would go again even though the beer was pretty average.
