To the best of my knowledge Henrik Øl og Vinstove is the best stocked draught beer bar in Norway, with an impressive 54 tap lines (including one with cider and a few industrials, such as Ringnes, Guinness and Kilkenny, but still!), so I always stop by when I’m in Bergen. The entrance from Engen is rather unassuming, so I walked past it on my first visit years ago, you basically enter a dark, long narrow hallway, with Grieg cartoons on the wall, up a set of stairs to the second floor pub. The draught beer menu is listed on two blackboards on the wall next to the bar, which is useful to checkout before you ask the bartender as there is a good rotation from day to day. The pub itself is very plainly laid out, with little decoration or fancy features, so the atmosphere may not be like in a Victorian pub. But service is usually good, except when the pub gets packed - which it will be at nights, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. For a good, quiet pub experience I recommend going early in the week or at least shortly after their 4 pm opening hour. Then you can sit down at the bar and have a nice long conversation with bartender Halvor. Last visited: 2014-09-06
The must-visit in Bergen. Huge variety across the taplist from local flying brewers ABC to worldwide favorites like Cantillon. If they don’t got it you don’t need it. Clean modern interior. Did not notice the lack of music (do you really need to listen to classic rock at all times?) as it was fairly crowded, but it was not too noisy. Seemed to be mostly locals. Friendly bartender. Decent prices for Norway, except for some of the imports. Does not serve food, but you can bring in from the deli downstairs if you ask nice. DO NOT MISS!
Been here on several occasions, and I really like staying here. Except one thing, the cleanliness of the lines tend to be too good, especially in the early hours. With this I mean that there’s still some cleaning agent to be tasted in some of the beers. Guess they don’t flush enough after cleaning.
But the service is fine, the selection one of the most interesting in Norway, and the beers are in good form. Will always go back to Henrik when I’m in Bergen.
A wonderful bar experience! An amazing range of European Beers including Norwegian, Danish, Belgian and UK selections. The 54 taps are amazing for such a small, second floor operation. A great range of bottle beers as well. The bar manager was a brewer himself and was happy to share his knowledge and advice. A great place to kick back and relax after a day of touring in Bergen!
If you are in Bergen and appreciate craft beer you have to visit this place. No music, no bullshit, just decent beer and LOTS of it. 54 taps says it all. The owner drives his car to Sweden and Denmark to pick up kegs from the breweries they feature. Thats dedication. And it shows.
Doesn’t look like much from the outside because the pub is on the 2nd floor. A great pub with a fantastic atmosphere, I went there four times, I’d be there many times a week if I was a local in Bergen. A killer selection of 44 taps, that’s a lot of taps for Norway, surprisingly not so expensive. Carefully selected bottle list with a few of them that can set you back more than you want to. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff, very good with recommendations and just cool to talk to. Some kind of a small back-patio where you can drink outside with a roof over your head in the very unlikely event that it rains on Bergen. So far ahead of the rest of Bergen beer bars that there is not even a #2. Actually I didn’t even find such a great beer bar in the much large Oslo.
