I have to say we were a bit disappointed with Hops & Barley. Four of us, led by me came here on Monday 20th Jan 2014. It was very cold outside and we expected a warm, cosy brewpub: it’s not like that.
The front room with it’s minute brew plant and bar area is cold looking and boring, the drab tiles and colour scheme not helping to make you feel welcome. No pictures or posters adorn the walls, it’s all very, very basic.
The beers were OK, four different ones on offer, staff friendly enough and unintrusive. It was early when we arrived and began to fill up a little as darkness fell.
We just found it a bit soleless to be honest.
Walked in during the end of a brew day, brewer was about to add coffee to a small trial beer. Nice smell of hops inside.
Got the sampler tray. Inside keeps a traditional German flair but with a touch of modern interior. Beers are nice but I was expecting something a bit different, instead the beers are very much in line with the typical German styles. A special beer is usually avail as well to keep things interesting.
Place quickly fills up, service is friendly with brewer on location.
Probably one of the best brewpubs in Berlin but maybe I was expecting more? Four beer and a cider on tap, all good, but not outstanding. Football on two big screens don’t appeal to me. But the young crowd seemed to enjoy both football and craft beer. (Visited September 25th 2013)
I came here with high expectations. The place was crowded. Football on the Tv’s for a younger hip clientele who drank ales. In Germany is ale not so common, but I found the ales to be very ordinary. Go if nearby.
