A great place to buy beer or wine. Very knowledgeable staff. I used to live in this neighborhood and have enjoyed watching them invest a lot of time and money developing their beer and wine sections over the past 15 years. A must see place when visiting Iowa City and walking distance from the downtown and campus. Their website is pretty darn good as well. They have a computer in the beer room that you can use to look up stuff online with if need be. Sign up online to get their new arrivals and weekly specials.

John’s Grocery is where Andy Griffith would go to get beer. The store almost seems like an historical monument...and there really can be no valid arguments when you say that it’s the best beer store in Iowa. Their European selection is simply a sight to behold.. Easily over 800 different kinds. I’ve actually been in their cellar underneath the store, and if we’re including all the beer down there, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had over 1000 unique offerings. Incredible really. While they easily have the largest Belgian and European offerings in the state, their domestic micro selection could definitely be bigger, and hopefully it will be in the near future. However, as far as American craft brews go, I was thoroughly impressed with John’s selection of Rogue’s (that alone was worth the trip). They have virtually all the quality Trappist, Belgian, German, & English beers...as well as aged J.W. Lees Harvest Ales (1998-2005 last time I stopped in). Their website has a fairly good (yet not comprehensive) list of the beer they have, so I’ll spare you the details. The service is exceptional. Their people know a ton about beer. If you live in the midwest or are passing by on I-80, it may be a sin not to stop by and check it out. Very cool, old-fashioned atmosphere and fantastic import selection. John’s Grocery is an absolute must see.

Directly on the corner with parking in the back. Clean brick building with the inside divided into sections like it had additions added over time. Beer area had individual beers and six pack holders to select singles and a cooler with six packs and cases cold. I got a six of singles and a sampler 12 pack from an Iowa brewer. Nice selection of shirts, hats, beer glasses and other beer collectables. Well worth the visit if you are in Iowa City.

An absolutely AMAZING selection. The staff is incredibly knowledgable and helped me figure out what other beers I might like just by giving them a couple of basic beers to start with. A few beers did look a bit out of date, but with that big of selection, you try to keep up as well as they do. I went up to U of Iowa for a saxophone lesson and ended up stopping here for two "Build Your Own 6-packs". Great place. Period.

WOW, let me say that again, WOW!!! Huge selection, Belgians, english, Germans, other Europeans. Huge cooler of micros (local and beyond). New huge wall of glassware and breweriana. Only drawback was the small selection of mix and match sixer’s. I was hoping it would be like the Boise Co-Op and have everything available for mix and match. Picked up 6 years of J.W. Lees, 2001 A Le Coq Imperial Extra Double Stout, 3 Cantillon’s and a bunch of others. Made 2 trips from Davenport while on a 2 week business trip. Well worth the trip. This is a beer lover’s dream store.

Charming little family owned corner store in downtown Iowa City. The place is very small and is packed to the rafters with almost everything you would ever need....including an exceptional beer selection. You can find all of the local small brewery offerings in addition to a large selection of imports including many Belgians. The staff have always been helpful. They also have a pretty good wine selection and lots of beer glassware from different brewers.

It is a staple. Other than one cashier who I have on several occasions wanted leap the counter and beat the @#$$% out of, it is a great store. The new beer cooler is awesome and the selection is the BEST IN IOWA.

This store has a large selection of beers. However, the turn off was that I found this store to be dirty with many of their beers out of date. The stafff seemed knowledgeable, however they seemed to talk down to me as if I did not know anything about beer. I

Great selection. Visiting my girlfriend’s family this is a great reward for driving 6 hours to Iowa. Superb selection of midwestern beers and great imports, especially Belgian and German. So much beer packed into such a small space, and the addition of a huge selection of proper glassware tops off the selection. If only more stores like this could be found where you don’t expect to find a good beer store. They have food, since they are a grocery, but that’s not what I’m here for, so I marked it as n/a.

I’ve been buying most of my Iowa City beer at Dirty John’s since I was in college at the U of Iowa. It’s a family operation now in its third generation--at least that I’ve seen at the counter. Although the beer room can get a bit crowded on a busy afternoon or evening, it’s the place to go for the best beer selection I’ve seen in Iowa. The service is tremendous, and the advice is pretty good, too. And, you can pick up steaks for the grill on your way out.

Dirty John’s has by far the best selection of beer in the area and the college-town / mom-and-pop grocer feel only improves the ambiance. The staff is very helpful and includes not only a selection of beer experts, but also a few dedicated souls to helping customers in search of a good bottle of wine.
