World class. Came here for the RBWG 2013 welcome dinner. In pretty much every regard this place is outstanding. The draft list is massive, with something like 85 beers pouring. On our visit they put some extra special beers on, which was great. The bottle list, too, is extensive; I believe it spans more than 50 pages. Great food options, well made, delicious. Prices on beer and food are exceptional. The service was impressively attentive and efficient. Spending the evening here was easily one of the best beer experiences of my life.
Yes, a killer laid-back populist vibe. They call it a gastropub but it’s not really that, it’s a good bar with solid comfort food and breakfast all day--great breakfast all day, I should say. If the array of tap handles at the bar don’t signal it’s a beer bar, then the tap handles hanging from the ceiling like stalactites will. Located in a funky, artsty-grungy neighborhood about a mile away from Bold City. Great service and they are definitely worth a visit.

This wasn’t on RB? Seriously? It’s around the corner from Bold City, has a huge long line of taps and a bottle list to boot. Good deals on diner food and the odd flash of grit in its character. I can’t imagine a more compelling destination that Jax might have to offer.

I found this place to be very frustrating. I visited for a late lunch on a Sunday and didn’t find it busy. Kickbacks is absolutely massive. There’s a couple of distinct drinking areas, with a patio out front, a sports bar section, and a dark back room that feels a little more opulent. The back room was so dark that I couldn’t figure out if they were having electrical problems or they seriously wanted the place to feel like a subterranean cavern. I have no problem with low-lighting, but if it’s so dark that I can’t see any of the tap handles or design features, then what’s the point? I settled on sitting at the counter in the sports bar section. When I sat down I had to clear out some space for myself on the sopping wet counter amongst the collection of dirty dishes and used glassware left by the previous party. I assumed the party had just left and that someone would clear up the mess shortly. I was wrong. No one during the entirety of my hour-long visit bothered to stop and clean up, so I got to enjoy the sight and smell of their half-eaten food as I dined and drank. I ordered a chicken sandwich and fries in addition to my beer. The fries and chicken weren’t tasty, clearly frozen and out of a bag. When my food arrived, the waiter sort of just chucked the order at my counter space and moved on without saying anything. The service from the bartender wasn’t very good either. She was very transactional and wasn’t willing to offer tastes of any beer before purchase. Mercifully, the beer selection was better than the food or service. There were easily over 100 available. Nothing was particularly eye-catching, but there were many options to choose from. I settled on an ESB from CCB that was pretty solid. Prices weren’t expensive; I guess you get what you pay for. Overall, I was really disappointed with Kickbacks. World class places offer a combination of ambiance, service, food, and beer selection. Kickbacks has a bunch of taps. They’re lacking in every other area.
A trendy place. All the taps, but locals comment that there may not be one beer on to have that day. On a main street and in a growing craft beer neighbourhood. I had 4 good stouts, and Brian got his Narwhal. Good service.Prices reasonable.
It’s difficult for me to rate this place as it’s undergoing some serious extensions/refurb works so has a reduced tap list. Anyways.... Kickbacks is a cool, laid-back bar with a focus on quality beer. Tap list is (usually) extensive and varied. Bottle selection was interesting and large, but you will have to shell out big-time for some of the more limited stuff. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Food is tasty classic American bar fare. Entertainment comes in the form of Danny Rowland who can be found in the bar some 24 hours a day! A top-quality beer venue. Looking forward to revisiting in the future.
Kickbacks is a serious beer bar with a nice atmosphere and great selection. Tap list is enormous- just completely insane. It is listed up on the wall in micro font so bring your reading glasses because there are 60+ beers to choose from. ON TAP! Kickbacks is sort of an oddity since Jacksonville is not a beer city by any means, but in this area you have Bold City, Intuition Aleworks, and Kickbacks all within five blocks of each other (though I would not recommend walking between them since the neighborhood is semi-ghetto). Food here has been pretty good every time I’ve been. Service is good. Really, no need to sit at the bar. Go get a table and have a blast or sit outside. Tap list usually has Cigar City, Bold City, Intuition, Swamp Head if you want Florida locals. Really almost a world class beer bar in one of the most random locations ever. You must go here.
RBWG 2013 welcome dinner was here. GREAT selection of beer on tap (84) plus a huge bottle list. The staff was friendly,. knowledgeable and speedy. The place was packed and we never waited for a server. The food was good and fast.
A must stop if you’re in the area.
They had a great phone app with the tap list, updated as they changed kegs. A very nice touch.
My wife and I popped in here on a rainy Monday night and were surprised to see almost every table filled. The location seems to be fairly central for Jacksonville but then again we hadn’t gotten a very good sense of the city in our short time here. We sat at the surprisingly short bar - 5 or 6 stools - because it was wide open. The taps are lined up across it, blocking the bartender’s face, and there are a couple tap towers to the right, too. I think it was 85 or 86 in all. Didn’t even bother to look at the bottle menu because we found some fun drafts. The food was so-so; stretching it a little for the term "gastropub" when our orders were fairly straightforward pub grub. Reading other reviews, it seems to be all about which items you get, though. The bartender was super nice and knew his stuff. Smoking appeared to be allowed in here, which kind of sucked. Otherwise, the atmosphere was great; lots of beeriana and it felt very lived-in. The draft list was written out on the wall on the right; it’d be helpful if there was another or a bigger one or one closer to the bar, too. Glad I got to stop in this highly-recommended place on my road trip. I’d also recommend it to anyone stopping through Jacksonville.
Update 2: this place failed a bunch of health code insoections. Meat was unrefridgerated. Do not go! Update: I decided to give this place another shot a few weeks ago. Service was poor. Most beers on the list were not in. Then I recieved a beer I did not order because the one I asked for was out with out asking me if I wanted it. This place sucks. Old rate: Yeah, where to begin with this one? Well let’s start with the fact I sat at the bar, may not be the best choice with this place. It’s tough to interact with the bar tender. The taps block the whole bar so it’s tough to get their attention or hold even a modest conversation. Here was my view: http://i.imgur.com/mPbRNmw.png
Anyway, the tap list was large... But I could not see it from my seat and it was not in a menu form either. Like having a 20 inch dick but keeping to a life of celibacy. I did not eat but the menu was expansive. The vibe the place gives off is cool, open brick, tap handles galore, dusty beer glass hanging from ceiling, cool. I had two beers, then decided I needed to go somewhere else. I may return, but will not go out of my way for it.
