Updated: Dec 03, 2013. Checked in with work again. Not sure why they constantly have to go next door to their other bar to get the beers which all in all slows down the service. A few tables but damn took a good few minutes to get our drinks. Zinne XMas on the last bottle which is sad for a seasonal. Lunch menu still tasty with another special menu with seasonal game food. How to start rating this place - Ane Vert or Green Donkey. I call it an institution of Brussels’ cuisine right along RestoBières and BierCircus. The place is not about modern feel or flashy menu. The place is almost a sign that time has stood still, to the days of old when ’donkeys’ - ’Ane’ roamed the streets of Schaerbeek and outnumbered its inhabitants giving life to the local economy. L’Ane Vert is a place that takes you back in time of the real Brussels, the atemporal as Jacques Brel would sing. I write all of this because the place has a vibe and a soul, the neighborhood, the locals, the old market halls built in 1901 are a testimony to the history of the area. All these elements help situate the atmosphere for any tourists - beer geeks in search for a true Brussels vibe. Inside is typical of the Brussels-Belgian estaminet style, a bit old fashioned, with some tacky decor, a great opening giving view on the kitchen so you can see all that is going on. Service ranges from spotty (seldom) to great. Given that we often visit with work, we never had to complain and the owner is usually the one serving you with his wife at the bar. Dishes are typical of Belgian influence with some nice local Brussels dishes as well and a few being beer infused. Beer selection, while not big, shines by the choice of supporting local breweries such as Cantillon or DeLaSenne along with other names.Food quality is up to my tastings while not being highly complex it brings back memories of mom’s home meals. Worth a stop if wanting to venture out of the touristy spots, and a good place to visit before going to the Schaerbeek Beer Museum. 5-8-10-8-8-15
