Fantastic place that looks like a dive from the street. They have a large selection of beer and excellent food. My only complaint is that the beer is on the pricey side, but we get what we pay for, right?

This place is really great when it comes to a beer destination. They have lots of connections and always have great things on draft, and they brew and distribute their own beer. I donít like their food, and itís pretty generic. I must give a shout out to the bathroom. WOAH. Where this place upsets me is the overall general attitude. For me, craft beer is about community and sharing and ultimately being able to produce beer in your own backyard/neighborhood that is better and competitively priced with the huge domestics that were forced down our throats for years. While Iím sure Local Option doesnít disagree with this, they also tend to embrace the attitude of exclusivity and making customers who havenít tried 2000 beers feel inferior. Additionally, if you donít look like a typical beer connoisseur or brewer, the customer service can be lacking. I have a baby face, and even though Iím several years older than drinking age, I look 19. With that, I always have my proper ID, the bartender looked it over, and I was served. This seems to be enough everywhere else, but not here. The rest of the day I was treated like a lost DePaul student. I was informed that one of the beers I ordered would be "too dark for my taste". After insisting that, yes, I wanted the ídarkí beer, it was poured for me. Another friend of mine who, at the time, was running the beer program at a different bar in Chicago that is listed as one of the better bars on this website, also happens to have boobs and blond hair. Apparently that was an indicator that she knew absolutely nothing about beer to them. You guys need to wake up and smell the hops. Beer knowledge is no longer preceded by obesity and beards. Thereís too many good beer places out there to have the crappy attitude.

Stepped in when I had some time to myself visiting Chicago last week and this place was deservedly off the hook in so many ways. However, it was undoubtedly one of the more harder bars to find; even with all the directions from passersby I didnít get any closer until I decided to play favorites and to not to listen to every geographic instruction that I had been told since stepping off the Red Line. The only way I knew the building was indeed the one I had been looking for, was because its fluorescent lights reflected off the windows off a bricked apartment across the avenue. There was no sign, just, as I said, fluorescent lights positioned by LOís entrance. When I walked in, the first thought that popped into my head was that it was a lot smaller than I had first anticipated, but I quickly joined a lesbian couple at the bar and ordered a few beers. Thirty-four minutes after sitting down, the bartender wiped off a Local Option contract-brewed beer on their giant chalkboard, writing in its place "Dreadnaught IPA". The food wasnít great and it seemed to be a little too expensive, even for Chicago city life, but it was decent for what it was and it had come fast and hot. My bartender on that night was a 40ish heavily-tatted woman who didnít yell nor whisper. In my opinion, she had the perfect sound power for a bartender and I know there are plenty who will agree with me. She was patient, helpful and friendly. The bathrooms were a trip, or at least the guysí were: no mirror, one swing-door stall and the whole room was illuminated by ultraviolet lights which amused the hell out of me. I wouldíve liked there to be a mirror, but you canít always get everything that you want. Awesome bar. I expect to be back!

Looks like a biker bar from the outside. Inside, a bunch of beer geeks drinking great stuff. Bartenders and servers really know their stuff. I donít have a lot of experience with Chicago bars, but they had beer here Iíve never even heard of, along with some of their own stuff. More expensive than what Iím used to, but a pretty good deal for big city stuff. Overall, great! I canít wait to come back.

Ambiance was cool, somewhat of a biker/metal theme, but nothing off putting. Service was pretty solid, with bar tenders who like to talk about beer and are always quick to fill up your glass. Selection was pretty great, lots of Belgian stuff I havent seen anywhere else, and some other one off american stuff, and a great bottle list too. Did not eat here. Overall, a place that should be seeked out when in Chicago.

Great spot. This place has officially surpassed Map Room, HopLeaf, SmallBar Division, and Fountainhead on my list of personal favorite Chicago beer stops. The staff is absolutely ingrained in this business. They followed Tony from his last venture, and many have been there from the beginning. You can tell by the way they present themselves, and the care they take in their craft, creating both craft beer and a craft beer atmosphere. Great vibe in this place. Iím not a metal head. Iím a long haired hippy, but I never felt out of the place, and the staff was a great reason why. Very welcoming, the vibe is lively and overall very joyous...most of the people here are totally geeking out on the dankest beer list in the city, so why not. Their tap list is very well rounded, and at 31, itís the perfect number. A bit of everything for everyone, and I would know as my group was 10 thick, and we visited numerous times and each time someone found something new and interesting that they enjoyed. The bottle list is spectacular. Short and sweet. Plenty of vintage bottles. Focused mostly on bottles that age well, they have a great selection of things you will not find in the city, anywhere! The food was fantastic, each of the three times our group decided it was time to put some food in our belly. Swordfish tacos, shrimp tacos, crab cakes, french fries, tots, pan fried spinich. A very nice, concise, well rounded menu. I wish this place the best. This is the epicenter of beer passion in the hear of the Midwest. I am proud to support this venture.

(Visited 06/2012): Local Option is located on the north side of Chicago on Webster. Parking on the surrounding streets is fairly difficult to find.

The interior has a red and blue color scheme accented by a chalkboard listing the beers and some snare drum heads. The long bar is along the left side and there are some booths in the back. They also had a marker board that read "Welcome Beer Nerds", which I thought was a nice touch.

The bar has around 30 beers on tap from brewers like Goose Island, Three Floyds, Central Waters, Port Brewing and Local Option house beers. Lots of bottled options too from Bells, Three Floyds, Goose Island and many more.

Service on a weekday afternoon was good, and the bartenders were accommodating considering I showed up right as they opened.

I did not try any food on this visit.

Overall this is a great Chicago beer bar.

Easy to find location with street parking. Late afternoon on Saturday and the place was busy but had no trouble finding table and the same on Sunday. Chalk board with draft beer list. Freindly service and good knowledge of beers. Started with tap list and server gave one of the house bottles to go. I had new beers for me. Very good food menu of sandwichs and main courses at a good price for the city. Short trip from downtown, but long trip from Cincy. I went two nights and I will return.

Pretty much a world class craft beer bar. Fairly small and crowded on a Saturday night but my crew of three managed to find a table after a round standing at the bar. The tap list blew my mind. I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable of American craft breweries and I only recognized a handful of breweries from the chalkboard. The staff was very friendly and beer geeky and made wonderful selections throughout the evening. A must visit if you are in Chicago.
