Visited 2/28/14. Nice clean and bright place, plenty of awesome beer to choose from as well as taps, which is cool. One guy was working alone and happy to field my questions. I enjoyed one sample on tap and bought 4-5 bottles. I could have easily spent a ton of money here, but hey, I’m from southern Georgia. No real complaints with the place or my visit. They had some clearance beer which is cool!
Updated 2/10/2014: Hadn’t updated my review since 2011, so this is long overdue. PROS: Great use of a small space; bottles everywhere the eye can see, nothing phoned in, but awesome beer everywhere you look; if a hard to find release is in the area, it’s probably here first. Service has been great in recent visits- I’m definitely not one of the "in crowd" but Tyler, Daniel, etc. always seem to remember past requests and preferences in our conversations, and have solid recommendations as well. I also think the beer here is priced very well, and is usually close to the lowest prices I can find on the same beer elsewhere around town. CONS: I really wish they had some kind of small cheese/meat cooler, but I’m making things up here. Maybe that their daytime hours are a bit limited- that’s about it. OVERALL: This place is pretty awesome, and you should not make a trip to Louisville without dropping by. A stand-alone destination that is worth the drive from far out of town.
If you know what you are looking for, this can be a great place, but do not expect much in service. For some reason they tend to ignore you which is strange for such a small space. A ton of Shelton Brothers and 12% products dominate the selection which can be good and bad. The atmosphere is very cool, its a nicely laid out space, and the patio can be fun to hang out in, but you always feel like if you are not part of the club, you’re not really welcome there.
Louisville Beer Store is on Market Street, just outside of downtown. Great ambiance inside. Really clean and well-presented. Impeccable organization and cleanliness. I didn’t get acknowledged by the staff, though. Prices are also high. The size of the store limits inventory. There is an 8-tap bar which had some good stuff on, but I didn’t have any. They were sold out of everything I was looking for at the time, but I’d be willing to visit again when trying to find something in Louisville.

+++ Updated Rating September 2013 +++ Revisited during another trip to Louisville. The selection in this store continues to amaze me - nicely organized and beautifully displayed. The real feature here is the Shelton Brothers availability, if you have a bunch in your market you may not be as impressed as I was. I visited early evening this time and there was a very friendly group hanging around. Both of my visits have had great service, surprised to read so many comments to the contrary on here.
+++ Original Rating April 2013 +++ Visited soon after they opened on a Tuesday. Small bottle shop with a big selection that also features a very well chosen list of 8 draft beers. The store is mostly comprised of coolers and shelves of beer, there is not anywhere to sit and chill, though you can stand at the bar near the check out. The selection here was truly fantastic, particularly Belgians, and Lambics. They had the largest variety of Fantomes I have seen in one place. Service was very friendly, wen out of their way to make suggestions, and was truly engaged with learning about what I was looking for. Once he established I knew a bit about beer, we had a nice geeked out beer conversation. Between this place and Sergios, Louisville is truly a special place to shop for beer.
88 = ★★★★ (best in area, a must for locals and visitors)
I only use the total score, not the component parts.
6 drafts and bunch of bottles but I came away wanting more. New looking place, looks cool and clean. The prices are really cheap, almost a third of what I’d see in Chicago. However, compared to the selection I’ve seen in a lot of other places the selection was lacking. Decent place but nothing special
Hundreds Of import and craft beers to select from. The service is very knowledgeable but not particularly Friendly. You can buy a beer on tap or get a chilled beer from the cooler and drink it in the store but be ready to stand, there are no barstools because this is not a bar it is a beer store they don’t want you to hang around for a couple of hours drinking beer. I like to go once every couple of weeks To find out what is new.
I am going to try again. The store is nice enough. Small footprint with good selection. I was either the only customer or one of two the entire time I was in the store, but felt as if I were a distraction from om whatever the employee would prefer to be doing. Maybe I caught them on the wrong day? Regardless, I will give them another chance when I find myself in the area. The store has great potential.
True bottle shop (not many 6pks/4pks available). Shelton Brothers stuff out the wazoo. Small selection overall, but mostly pretty good stuff. Would like to see more domestic stuff; the Shelton Bros. stuff is, obviously outstanding, but lets not forget the enormous variety and quality that American craft brewers have to offer! The Louisville Beer Store is a solid spot though. Definitely worthy of a visit if you're in the neighborhood.
Nice bottle shop near downtown Louisville. Small but cool ambiance with a ton of bottles and some good drafts, which you can drink (as well as sample) there. Value was good too. The only thing that wasn’t good was the service; the two employees behind the counter were completely disinterested, and unknowledgeable to boot. Not rude; just in their own worlds (and s...l...o...w...). This place would be great if they reconstructed their staff, but it’s still worth a stop.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with LBS. Their store is cool and they have a decent selection but their service is the pits. Nobody wants to help you and if you ask question, they talk to you like you’re a fool. It is what it is, just know what to expect when you walk through the door.
