If more brewpubs were like this I think that more people would come over to drinking the local brews instead of the national brands. my Idea of heaven would be to have a Lunar in every town brewing its own local beer.......oh wait thats Europe

Illinois’ answer to Rowland’s Calumet, this place has far more of a local neighborhood corner bar vibe than a "welcome all comers" brewpub vibe. For all intents and purposes, it is primarily a corner bar that happens to brew its own beers. Said beers are generally decent and unexceptional. They sometimes miss the mark but they are always more bold and flavorful than, say, bland play-it-safe corporate chain brewpub beers. At least they’re not afraid to aim and miss, and that alone earns ’em more respect than the Rock Bottoms of the world. Their guest tap and bottle selections are not huge but they offer some surprising gems like Triple Karmaleit on tap or Beelzebuth in bottles. Food? Forget it. Your choices are a) Tombstone-like frozen pizza, or b) chew your own cud. Major kudos for decent house-brewed beers in an unpretentious corner-bar setting.

A note to ElGaucho, 3 reviews above this one: a smoking ban in Chicago doesn’t do much good out in Villa Park. Even the proposed county-wide ban doesn’t touch Lunar because it’s in DuPage county, not Cook.

If this was my corner bar I’d be pretty pleased. For a small place, it looked like they could hold a decent crowd. Definitely a hang-out for locals, and as such it wasn’t long before someone lit up a cheap-ass stogie and somebody else started singing loudly off-key. Juke box fought with a CD player, resulting in strange mixes like Johnny Cash over R.E.M.

Regarding their beer, one surprise was that there was no "light" beer on their current lineup... no Pils, no Pale Lager... the lightest beers were an Amber and a Bitter. I, for one, was pleased that tap real estate was saved for beer with more substance.

Rustic, rugged paneling enhanced the warmth of the place and raised, built-in tables had perfect foot ledges. I couldn’t have been more comfortable (except that a big dude who looked like George Clooney in full camo was gesturing in my general direction while conferring with his buddies... but I’d been in worse situations).

All in all, good local flavor with some well-made offerings.

pretty cool place. Small bar feel. Wouldn’t know it was a micro unless you asked or looked at the tap handles. And, they have a really awesome dog, too! Beer was phenomenal.

Unfortunately, I only go there when friends are in town. Great selection - but like Steward’ mentioned, it’s quite smoky.

Extremely friendly bar. Bartender was so enthusiastic about their beer and the locals were very welcoming and friendly. A little smoky with not much ventilation, but we were allowed to crack open the back door to let some air in. Most (if not all) of their beers are unfiltered and were beautiful. Their overall line of beers are pretty damn good too. Just a short jog off the freeway where I-290 and 294 meet. Worth visiting at least once.

This is a great bar. If you want micro brews in bottles or some of their own micro brews on tap, then this is your place. The staff is really great and I can talk to them for hours. The locals are also great and I plan on making the long drive out there many more times just to hang out here. Kristen, you rock and I look forward to another refill!

My kind of place, a neighborhood corner bar with its own brewery. Friendly kind of a place. And the beers? Lunar brews good stuff. I highly recommend the IPA. They’ve got their own delicious brews on tap, plus guest beers, and a couple of piss-waters (if you want ’em). Beyond that, they’ve got loads of bottled micros and imports (Belgian, German, English...) to satisfy your tastes. I recommend stopping by.
