At some point or another we have all envisioned the perfect place for beer. Some people may envision a posh, large, modern, high-tech beer emporium with a tap list of 100 beers and a bottle list of 2,000 bottles. This is essentially ChurchKey in Washington DC. But ChurchKey has become a place for people to be seen, pay for overpriced wine at a beer bar to make a point, order a whiskey in front of a group of professional women to look sophisticated. ChurchKey is the ultimate beer bar, but with no character or charm.

Ma Che is the opposite of CK. Does it have 50 taps? No. Does it have 2,000 bottles in the cellar? No. Does it have a $5 million keg cooling unit with variable temperatures? No. Does it have a celebrity chef? No. Does it have rare beer sitting all over the shelves for you to ogle at but can’t afford? No.

Ma Che is the best beer bar in the world because it was never trying to be the best. Ma Che is a hole in the wall off a side street in Rome that you can never find. The name alone is unpronounceable making tourists unable to ask where it is. But Ma Che is the ultimate. It is open from 10 am to 1 am everyday. You can take your beers outside onto the sidewalk and chat and meet new friends. Though the tap list is small, it rotates with ferocity. The only static tap is Tipopils, a world class session beer. The rotating taps include small breweries Ma Che has personal connections with: mostly Italian, but some American, Danish, Norwegian, British as well. Many beers on tap are made exclusively for Ma Che. The bottle list shared with Bir&Fud is extensive covering retired geuze to discontinued Italian rarities. There are beers here you cannot find anywhere else in the world. The bartenders are trained very well. Every beer poured from tap is a 5/5 for appearance. Ma Che is really a small, close knit group of friends- a hidden gem that people have made their home. This place has personality and a connection. It was my beer embassy in Italy. I made so many new friends and tried many exotic beers, some that I didn’t even order! They just kept appearing. Ma Che completed a beer journey of a lifetime and I hope to return as soon as I possibly can.

Uno dei pochi posti dove bere buona birra a rotazione e scoprire novità da ogni parte del mondo sempre aggiornate. Il gestore dovrebbe curare maggiormente la pulizia del pub e fare un po’ di spazio, l’ambiente è ai limiti della vivibilità e la mancanza di cucina è una pecca.

Everything has been said, hasn’t it? Excellent place. Small as shit, just a hole in the wall. Almost missed it. When I popped by at 11.30 on a friday, it was just me and the bartender, watching The Simpsons in italian. Legend bartenders, always up for a chat, obviously very knowledgable of what they are serving. And what they are serving is quite obviously why we’re there. Great selection. I watched Lazio vs Parma there, and the atmosphere does not stand back even a bit from english football pubs. Even the clientele was super friendly. Got several samples, discounts, rare beers.. brilliant.

A Roma è difficile trovare un locale con una selezione di birre come al " Ma che siete venuti a fà " ,e riguardo la preparazione del personale non posso dire altro che sono preparatissimi.

If I could give this place a 12 for service, I would. Manuele and his staff are the best! This place clearly deserves the wonderful reputation it has, with taps that rotate so often, if you take a break to go to the toilet, the beers will be different when you return. They share the beer cellar with Bir&Fud, so Manuele was very generous with pulling old beers from the cellar, making recommendations, and charging so little money it was crazy. Above all, the people are amazing! A great mixture of very friendly locals and expats. The foolish new law that makes drinking on the street illegal after 11 PM is annoying, but hasn’t dampened spirits at all. THE place to visit in Rome.

Un vero tempio della birra di qualità! Il locale è Estremamente piccolo e scomodo un vero "buchetto" MA offre birre veramente di qualità e alcune chicche introvabili o addirittura birre fatte apposta per il locale,per non parlare della impressionante selezione di birre in bottiglia. Peccato per la mancanza della cucina. Due parole anche su Manuele Colonna, il più grande appassionato di birra di qualità che abbia mai visto,riesce a trasmettere la sua passione e positività anche se ti conosce pochissimo.

Impressing selection of beers for those small and humble rooms. Good knowledge of the beers, glassware ok, prices ok. Also a bit surprised about this pub to be the best place according to ratebeer. I’ve seen places with better selection etc., but sure it’s good. 5 of the 16 taps were Danish beers!

Qui si viene solo per la birra, e come concetto il Macchè è un po’ diverso come classica concezione di pub. Da un buco è uscito fuori un tempio della birra, dove dopo Giorgione "Mastro Titta" ho iniziato a scoprire questo favoloso mondo. Sinceramente, se devo dirla tutta, preferivo il Ma Che Siete di un paio di anni fa, quando ancora giravano birre storiche oltre alle italiane e alle scoperte personali del proprietario. E’ qui che nel 2003, assaggiai per la prima volta l’Augustiner e mi si aprì un mondo...

E’ davvero incredibile come da un vero e proprio buchetto infrattato tra i vicoli di Trastevere Manuele Colonna sia riuscito a tirar fuori un tempio della birra di tale livello. Inutile stare a disquisire troppo sulla inadeguatezza e scomodità degli ambienti o piuttosto sulla mancanza di cucina. Il Ma che siete venuti a fà è birra allo stato puro, prendere o lasciare. 16 spine, di cui 3 a pompa, e una selezione di incredibile varietà e livello qualitativo. Ma non è solo quantità e qualità a fare la differenza qui dentro. Qui è la ricerca a farla da padrone. Accanto a classici immortali giustamente celebrati e riproposti a cadenza fissa, è possibile ogni giorno assaggiare birre nuovissime, molte in anteprima assoluta, che solo in pochissimi locali hanno. Nonostante il suo aspetto rustico e conservatore, il Ma che siete venuti a fà è una vera fucina di nuove esperienze birrarie. Avanguardia e tradizione qui convivono alla perfezione, in una selezione che davvero non ha punti deboli, comunque la si guardi. Anche la rotazione delle birre è continua, permettendo quasi ogni giorno di assaggiare almeno una birra nuova. Massima cura e attenzione è dedicata alla spillatura, che qui, a differenza di molti altri posti, è quasi una religione. E come non spendere una parola per quel fantastico personaggio che è Manuele Colonna, che ti tratta come un fratello anche se non ti ha mai visto prima e ti comunica passione per la birra come nessun’altro. Un locale da prendere così com’è, da vivere e frequentare ogni giorno, capace sempre di stupire.

A bit overrated is my humble opinion, but they got got a great selection of beers on tap, world class beer that is. Tiny pub, seating maybe for 15-20. Also a nice selection of bottled beers,you have to force your way to the cooler and try to get a glimse of the bottles in there. They dont have WiFi.
