Visited Friday, 13.5.16 in the afternoon. While I look at Ratebeer Places for, well, beer places, my partner-in-crime does a true research and finds the places that what they lack in rating options they cover with great ambiance and memories. So yeah, light beer, dark beer, one size fits all. Nothing too memorable in the tasting department. And yet, we spent quite some time in this crowded place, because it was fun. Shared a low table with a couple from North Carolina who came to the city for a weekend of musicals and enjoyed the layers upon layers of history on the walls and the bar. Despite it being quite of a tourist attraction, it didn’t feel this way at all.
Very cool place to get a drink in New York, though this isn’t exactly a beer nerd place. They really only had two beers when I was there - golden and black. They were pouring two for one when I was there. Sawdust on floor and plenty of atmosphere in this, supposedly New York’s oldest bar. Would be a great atmosphere when full.
This place should be a museum. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McSorley’s_Old_Ale_House
If you are looking only for great beer, don’t stop here, but if you like history and American Irish culture it is a must stop. In business since 1854 and has original memorabilia to from then. Chicken wish bones(most had to taken down by orders of the health department) are hung from the ceiling by soldiers departing for war with the idea that they’d take them down when they returned. Sawdust on the floor. The service people were Irish from Ireland. Choices of beer:light and dark(from a micro in upstate NY). Cheese & cracker plate was great - some of the best horseradish mustard that I’ve ever had.
My recommendation:Please go there at least once!
"Be good or Be gone."
Light or Dark? Don’t look for a beer list...cause all they serve is "Beer or Ale", whatever that means. Regardless, four beers for $11!!!! Granted, you get a glass stein (who knows how big, maybe 14oz?) with PLENTY of head, actually almost half head. The beer is "eh?", and probably comparable to PBR. Service is FAST and keep the drinks coming. I wasn’t even finished and had more on the table. Sawdust everywhere, reminiscent of the "good ol’ days". Overall, a nice place to stop in and drink plenty.
