Mel’s is a burger joint near Columbia University that serves craft beers. The food was average in quality and overpriced. My hamburger arrived lukewarm and undercooked. A burger, fries, and a pint ended up costing me $21. This is upscale fast food, and I was reminded how fast food also means that you have to eat it fast, because it starts to taste bad the longer it sits. The atmosphere is not bad, with mellow lighting, ball games on the bar TVs, and a chattering bunch of students and families filling up the place on a Friday evening. Classic rock played loudly on the sound system. It is a mediocre restaurant, but a pretty good beer bar, with around ten taps serving up fresh brews, including releases from Founders, Ithaca, and Captain Lawrence. Growlers are available, and they do something unusual here - you can rent a 32 or 64 ounce growler, and get your deposit back when you return it.
