What can be said but great beers on tap, extensive bottle list, vegetarian options and great fries (although they don’t call them that). The only drawback is that it is always crowed and no reservations. Best bet is to go for lunch or in afternoon. Service has not been bad when I have been there. If you are in Philly and like beer you are required to go there.
Monk’s is a must-visit spot for beer-fans in Philly. Amazing tap list and a large bottle selection of non-standard rarities. Get there early to secure a seat at the bar, front or back. I am lucky to live within a 20 minute walk of this place as I like to stop in often.
Probably best beer spot in Philly. I’ve always had good service, and this last time was no exception. Sitting at the bar, I still got the bartender’s attention during a busy afternoon whenever I needed something. List is always good and full of classic and new finds - from Pliny the Elder to more difficult to get local beers. Straight up Belgian fare for food.
Lovely building. Good service. Menu is expensive and pretentious. Nice draft list with some rare items. Expensive drafts. Extensive bottle list with outrageous prices. The mussels were fantastic but the rest of the meal was only ok.
One of the top places in Philadelphia, if not the best. Great food and beer. Can’t go wrong. I went for Zwanze Day, so a bit crowded as to be expected, but staff handled it very well. I’m not sure about their usually Saturdays.
Visited August 12th 2016 after a 12 miles walk in Philly at 100 degrees. English style pub with wood walls and floors. Narrow place and low lights. I had difficulties to take place on my table’s bench. The waiter immediatly showed us the beer menu and new arrivals. Taplist is about 25 beers from both USA and Belgium. I had Russian River and a fresh Tired Hands. They also have a "Bible" with more than 300 bottles from USA and Belgium as well as some other countries. You can order a Cantillon, Boon, De Dolles, Lost Abbey, Russian River amongst others. Beers on tap are ~$8 and prepare to pay at least $20 for a bottle. Food is very good, I had an amazing duck breast salad. Nice service even if the place was crowded. I’d definitely come back if I return to Philly.
An absolute must if you are in the northeast. Kind of a holy grail/Mecca like place for craft beer. I had 3 different Russian River beers on tap, along with some rare Belgian-collabs for Philly Beer Week. Their Belgian list is exhaustive and simply insane. Get the Mussels for dinner, 25 or 30 mussels stewed in a variety of flavors. Really quite excellent, and the place doesn’t attract the normal hordes like nearby restaurants. If you don’t know Monks Cafe is what it is, you just walk on by, and I’m sure that’s how they like it.
Visited twice late April/Early May 2016. First time stayed for a few beers, second time during a beer release for CBC, waited in line half hour until we left. Long narrow bar area, some seating downstairs. Apparently a bar with standing area upstairs as well, we never got that far. Had Pliny the Elder on tap, nice. Gets crowded fast, we got the feeling we were constantly in the way for the staff or other patrons, still a nice place to visit with a great tap list. I could go back, but would hope to get there on a less busy evening. Didn’t eat.
