Visited on 20/10/2017, when it was very busy on a Friday evening. An excellent pub, with a well chosen selection of beers on both cask and keg, which had a focus on the local. Service was friendly (we even got a quick tour of a very well organised cellar) and prices reasonable. A real standout pub.

One room pub around a mile out of the town centre with a great range of both cask & keg, something for everyone. Good atmophere, it’s usually busy, service is great. A must visit if in the area.

Been meaning to visit for a long time but rarely get to Reading. Glad I finally made it here. A load of beers/breweries I’d not come across, in fact I was after some local ticks and didn’t spot any on. Unlike a prior review, all three of us were offered tasters. I found the blackboards a bit bewildering in my tipsy state, especially as I could not see them all due to the crowded bar. Could do with a central blackboard, as per the one for kegs. Appreciated the old-school decor. A great place. Could only stay for two, will make it longer next time. Best summed up by a mate, "never knew this pub was here, it’s out of the way so wasn’t expecting it to be so big or have so many beers."

A great pub just outside the city centre. Impressive selection, always changing. A must go. Atmosphere is unique.

Visited January 16. Went after Castle Tap, this place was much busier, mix of people mostly older and really old local types, some looked like walking dead. The beer selection was interesting, many casks and also a number of kegs. The displays of beer currently on each pump appeared above the bar on blackboards, also letting you know what was on next. The beers were well selected, not mind blowing, but steady mix of small breweries, some Arbor featured, Siren Broken Dream, no Imperial Stout at the time. Service poor, lady knew not even what style of beers they were on the I asked about, no tasting allowed, although they did offer 3rd pints. Could do with an enhancement perhaps and a little more comfort, but worth popping in to sink a number of more unusual beers for Reading

Jan 2016 Rating = 86. Still a belting place to go, just a little steady on the beer range.
2007 Rating = 92. Absolutely cracking pub, recently bought and improved. A locals local with a constantly changing 12 Real Ales all specialy selected for variety, check the blackboards by each tap for whats on and whats due to go on. The wine is also selected carefully and constantly changing, very unusual for this type of pub, the food is hearty and imaginative, particularly the Sweeny & Todds pies. If this can keep going like this it will join the legendary British Pubs list, the equal of the Far Cats and Wellingtons of this world. It’s that good.

Buzzing on the Friday evening of my visit. The folks seem to be enjoying themselves. Great range of beers across 12 casks, plus another eight kegs. Mostly macro stuff in bottles. Good proxies, very friendly service. Lots of interesting beery brux a brac adorns the walls. An excellent place. Perhaps the best pub in Reading - a must-visit if you’re in town.

It’s taken us a long time to get here as it’s been on our radar for a few years now, but we finally visited here on Tuesday 26th May 2015. We parked Frank a couple of streets back from here (Devonshire Sq?) which was very handy as it was close to here and also the nearby Castle Tap. The pub is situated on a residential street which gets some traffic as it also appears to be on a bus route into town. You enter to the RH side of the pub as viewed from the front, the bar is ahead of you at the rear of this large rectangular room. Considering it was still relatively early, 18:30 or thereabouts it had a good number of folk in here and most seemed to be drinking the large number of cask beers that were on offer. I only noticed two Craft Keykeg these were dispensed from the same sort of chiller unit that we/Merton BF purchased earlier this year. The beer choice was fine but looking at what was coming next we’d clearly hit the pub in between some much better looking beers, don’t get me wrong, with Arbor on cask and Siren on keg the choice was not to be sniffed at, it is just there was a lot of mediocre beers to choose from. At lot of people were getting beers and heading outside so there may well be a garden or another room out back that I didn’t explore, or perhaps they just wanted a ciggie. Staff were friendly and quite chatty, though seemed a little vague when I tried finding out more about the upcoming Siren (Ryans leaving event) on the 22nd June. I liked it here, it is a very good pub, however I much preferred the nearby Castle Tap.
