UPDATE: Go have a beer from the gravity wood keg around on the side in the alley. Only stand up, this is where the regulars seem to drink.
very crowded place (next to Andechs am Dom) in shade of the cathedral. Food was exceptional; beer was Augustiner from the wood (it makes it good). Several floors; service was slow but polite (understaffed I think). Go and eat!
Another classical place very centrally located, a few meters away from Andechser am Dom. Augustiner beers on tap, quite nice, and a crowded terrace, with confident waitresses pulling you onto seating places.

If you want Augustiner from a wooden barrel, here is where you get it. Worth having it once, even if you’re not a Helles fan.
Classic interieure, not expensive, and they have a "Stehausschank" which is funny.
Centrally located and very cozy. Terrace in summer. Lots of wood, bavarian style. I prefer the downstairs floor. First floor too warm and hectic. Food is reliable to good. Nürnberger are grilled on open wood fire and are very good. Beer is Augustiner so also a plus. Service is fast and friendly.
Have dropped into the Glockl am Dom a number of times over the years, most recently July ’12.
Quite a dark. small by Munchen standards, wood pannelled venue with middle aged largely female serving staff who do a good job.
I’ve never seen this place less than half full and as you’d expect with most bars fills out from 5pm on a weekday evening, there are often quite a few reserved signs on tables.
3 beers on tap including Augustiner Helles straight from a wooden barrel.
I have had the Nurnberger Bratwursts here a number of times, small meaty sausages more like the English chipolata style than your typical wurst. Tasty and not too expensive.
You can literally piss into the Andechser am Dom some 3 or 4 buldings away.

I enjoyed this place, even though the room is too dark.
There are Augustiner and Hacker-Pschorr, and Augustiner directly from wooden kegs!
But more than the beer, here is the food to be higher than average in München, IMHO, very good meat. Very good service.
My rating is only 74 because the selection is only between 2/3 beers (but good), but the food is really good.
I think this place deserves a higher rating .. It’s just on the cathedral square , they serve a superb augustiner hell from a woodbarrel and the food is more than good .. So the place has everything you need .. I prefer it than the trendy andechs just next door both for ambience and beer ..
Location is good, of course, and a decent stop for hearty, tasty food (I love seeing the Franconian element in the heart of Oberbayern), but why settle for such a limited beer selection in a cramped seat when Andechser invites from just a stone’s throw away? Maybe combine the two.
This place is outstanding. Just opposite the towering Dom this small pub is over 100 years old and isn’t afraid to show it. Outside there are tables and chairs but the real treat is in the dark and atmospheric interior which is a haven of tranquility off the busy Marienplatz. During the day it’s the perfect place to relax and while away an afternoon whilst evenings are busy, raucaus and great for people watching. Evenings are hard to get a seat without a reservation but hang around and you might get lucky. The real treat though is the beer: Augustiner Helles, served crucially from the barrel. On tap at the Augustiner Gastatte nearby this is pleasant. Vom Holz Fass (wooden barrel, gravity) it is heaven. One of the greatest beers anywhere, beautifully served in this superb pub. Beer selection is irrelavant; If they served beer in heaven, Helles on gravity would be it. A must when in Munchen along with Augustiner Keller and Forschungsbrau.
