Back alley entrance leads to a sprawling three level space, decorated curiously to remind me of a mashup of Alice in Wonderland and the American southwest; it’s whimsical and arty, and weird. Sitting facing the bar is a little more straightforward, and like many bars in Rome, oddly, the stools are simply not comfortable (accepting that bar seating in general is a rarity here). The tap beer menu was being overhauled in the midst of our visit, and as a result our ordering process was rather convoluted. Baladin’s beers are usually not for me but a wide range of other breweries is typically available, though not for us and our poor timing. On a Friday early evening, most tables were marked as reserved, although at other establishments in Rome this same practice seemed sometimes to be a ruse used mostly to control walk-ins.
This is a new review, downgrading from 92 to 80. I have been going regularly to Baladin in the last 2 years, but not in the last 4 months. Yesterday I went there for dinner, and it was a delusion. We were two people and they sat us in the top floor on a tiny (50 x 50 cm) table. We ordered 4 beers from local breweries that are quite familiar to any Roman beer fan. Well, beer was completely not good, it was clearly oxidized, not fresh and with small signs of contamination. Food also has lowered the level, from excellent to ok. It is sad to see that what used to be one of my favorite beer scapes is loosing ground. Still the place is nice and the beer offer is wide, but they are clearly not keeping the standards.
Visited the 1st May 2016 - Near to the antic Roma this place is modern and quiet huge (you will not feel it when you enter but if you go to toilet you will see). Huge beer selection and that’s really amazing. Good Baladin beer selection for sure but also some treasure like Stone Barley Wine Old Guardian on tap... The service is very friendly and professional. Food is amazing. Burgers are superb! A nice place to see in Roma. Highly recommend.
Visited in February 2016 and again in May. Bad service, servers bored with me asking for higher rated beers which were all out of stock. Sencible decline since February. Good burgers and pretty good chips. A good choice of Italian beers but not top in quality. I hope it does not keep sliding downhill. Service is getting snotty!
Big, modern looking place well hidden off the very beaten turist track in Rome. Still full of locals. Mainly offerings from Borgo and Baladin on tap and bottled. Still, a very nice selection. Food was excellent: I had the best burger ever and my girlfriends tortellini was very good. Very nice service from the staff, we had samples and attention from the staff, despite this was a busy, Saturday afternoon. Highly recommend for food and beers in Rome.
