Visited in early December 2016, maybe five or six times. Got a table to eat dinner here once, since they have things on the menu that are vegan or easily modified to be so (I had a nice salad and a fairly mediocre veggie burger)...rest of the time I just sat at the bar. Understaffed except at the quietest times, which can be frustrating (when I got a table, I waited at least 15 mins with no one even coming within eye-shot, so I ordered a beer from the bar instead...once a waiter was procured after a polite comment to the bartender, there were often LONG lags between visits, and I could tell from looking around at how few waiters were around that this was more due to overworking vs. laziness). And sometimes all bartenders would disappear for 5-10 mins at a time...where did they go? Were they waiting tables? Obviously a management problem here of some sort. Most of the draft beer (which is of course all 4%) is disappointing, with one or two drinkable exceptions, but to some degree that’s to be expected. Stick to the bottles, mainly the Froehlich and Franconian, and you will enjoy yourself. A previous reviewer claimed you have to order food in order to have beer, which is not true.
Two blocks from my hotel, which makes this an easy tick! As noted, pretty normal looking brewpub, large and spatious inside. Long L shaped bar with the kitchen prep and pizza oven behind, which made for interesting stuff to watch while drinkin alone :). I am not sure whether laws changed recently or what, but I was not asked to order food here, or anyplace else in SLC, in order to have a beer. I ordered a few samples and a 500 ml bottle without any problems whatsoever, and most of the other folks at the bar were not eating either. Service was decent, perhaps a bit below SLC standards (which are quite high). Prices were a bit up as well - $1.25 for a taster is a price I would be happy to pay back home, but was basically the highest I paid during this trip. Beers ranged. I really liked the Chocolate Chili Porter - very nicely balanced.
Total side note here, but why the hell don’t more Utah brewers make the few beer styles that actually should be at or under 4%? I have seen one gose and zero Berliners on this trip so far, and only a few bitters. It would really seem that they are missing out on something potentially quite positive within the stupid tap beer restrictions imposed in this state.
Right in the heart of downtown, this place feels like a typical American brewpub. Service was friendly, though frustratingly slow. You can order samples of any beer, two at a time for $1.25. However, you have to order food in order to have beer due to ridiculous laws. Draught beer is expectedly boring due to the stupid 4% laws, though the standout was the Gypsy Scratch, a very nice brett beer. And they have some bottled beers; we had an Elephino IIPA, which was excellent. Standard place for SLC overall, both in beer quality and nonchalant service.
ambiance: looks and feels almost like a hopped up TGIFridays, pretty crowded and noisy, open flames, but a nice mix of people from hipsters to hipsters with hats, to normal people, to hipsters with glasses. service: decent, but I was able to grab a seat directly in front of a tap station, so I was well-positioned. Bar and wait staff all seemed incredibly busy and slightly brusque. Ordered food, the bartender totally forgot and was generally unapologetic. selection: about a dozen drafts and a dozen bottles. Various styles and strengths, although all drafts were 4% abv or under (allegedly). The two beers I tried were excellent-to-great. food: when it came, my "beer cracker" (a crispy flatbread pizza) was solid-to-excellent. value: standard for SLC, seemingly, which put it way better than similar places I’ve been elsewhere. overall: about equal to the nearby Squatters overall, but the beer and food was a bit better. Definitely worth the stop.
After a solid dinner at Red Iguana, we stopped in here to continue the brewery tour.
Nice, large-ish brewpub location in the downtown area. The place was packed due to the Outdoor Retailer convention being in town, but the service was still pretty decent and we were able to find a couple seats at the bar. They (inexplicably) only had one bartender working while they were there, and the guy was really busting his ass.
We didn’t eat here, but the food is supposed to be pretty good. I thought the beers were generally pretty good, probably some of the better ones compared to other places in town. Maybe a bit more expensive on the samples, though.
Would have been nice to stop in when they were less packed, but still a good experience and would definitely go back.
Wow just wow! Food is amazing here. Best in salt lake at a pub. Fish and chips for an expensive meal (GREAT) beer pizza for a cheap meal (great still). Many beers on draft 1.25 each. They know how to do low ABV beer. This is at the top of my list if I want to eat and drink in SLC.
