Sanford’s has changed its name to Historic Freight House, though apparently very little else has changed. The interior is massive and packed with tons of nostalgic signs, statues, sports collectibles, hubcaps, etc. The tap list, while extensive, is mostly safe offerings from the likes of macros and bigger micros. They did have around eight South Dakotan beers though, so I did get to drink some local stuff during my visit. Don’t expect to find the newer or more sought after breweries represented here. Service was good and prices are good, basically everywhere we went to in Rapid City has good beer prices. Not a terrible beer stop, but we had no trouble finding better tap lists around town.

Go here for the food, not the beer. The food was really awesome--great burgers, wonderful onion ring bricks--and the interior is very cool, just packed with hubcap collections, stuff, stuff, stuff. It was actually good for kids because it was noisy anyway and we played "I spy" until our food came. But the beer selection, while fine for South Dakota, that’s a relative measurement. Don’t expect much, and if you find a beer or two that you haven’t tried, consider yourself lucky.

Huge chain type bar with 34 taps including about a dozen macros. One one local or regional beer when I visited, which was disappointing. Friendly and knowledgeable server. Food was average pub grub.

Decent place. Food was good with enormous (beyond generous...) portions. A decent selection on both tap and bottle but nothing really special.

This is an old railhouse that has been turned into a restaurant. It is decorated with the oddest assortment of sport and antique memorabilia you have ever seen. Decent beer selection. Great food. Huge menu with large portions. Lots of good looking ladies working there as well.

Visited Sept. ’06. Beer selection in both bottle and tap is definitely far above average for the area, but this is not necessarily saying much regardless. Decor is pretty insane, they have more Americana per sq. foot in this place than I have ever even imagined. Menu is huge, both in actual size of the menu and the amount of food offered here, which was pretty good on both visits. Above average service, too. Worth a trip, particularly if you’re not sure what you’re in the mood to eat, because they have quite a bit (something like 17 different chicken sandwiches, for example).

April 2006, my second visit in 2.5 years. First time I thought I’d been impressed. This time not as much. They have about 20 taps, but only about 4 decent micros. Same for an extensive bottle lineup ... mostly the yellow beers, with just a few gems. If you’re from out of town, worth a stop.

Visited here back in July of 2003 and enjoyed it. Excellent selection of Midwestern and Western micros. Typical tummy filling pub grub and a lively crowd with plenty of TVs and sports memorabilia hanging on the walls.
