This was the first microbrewery I ever visited. It has been a staple of downtown St. Louis since the mid 90ís. Sleek dark looking place with good enough service and a good selection of only Schlafly beers, including some tap room only offerings. Good food, decent prices. You need to check this place out for the history and because it is a good time.
Old brick and wood kinda place. Expansive with multiple rooms. I liked the huge wooden beams in the ceilng. Kind of a small bar, but it looked like there was a bigger bar in another room. Kinda calm on a Friday night, but, it was early and during an ice storm. Retail shop in the center with some swag and lots of bottles to go. Some pricier limited beers, or pretty cheap six packs. Growler fill prices seemed solid. 16 beers on tap, however, most are distributed nationally, so there were only 5 I hadnít tried before. However, if you come here from outside a Schlafly distribution area, it could be a tickerís paradise. Beers range from average to very good, with more towards the latter side. I had a flight with a mild, cider, two IPAs and a smoked stout for $10. Also that snifter of the lovely Tasmanian IPA right from the source was a treat. Staff was friendly, though I did not appreciate the strong odor of cigarettes coming off of one of the bartenders. The major disappointment was the food. Now, Iím admittedly a jaegerschnitzel snob, but this schnitzel came to me underseasoned and tough, and the accompanying mashed potatoes were bland. My dish seemed to come out quickly, and other patrons made similar comments, which makes me think theyíre a little TOO efficient in the kitchen. Overall, a nice place to hang out a drink some solid beers, but Iíll probably eat somewhere else first next time.
Stopped in early on a weekday, so it was pretty quite. The place has a very ícommercialí vibe about it, but itís no big deal. Plenty of merchandise for sale, if you know what I mean. The guy behind the bar was friendly and very enthusiastic, but to be honest I prefer more standoffish bartenders who leave you in peace. They have a good assortment of beers on offer, and the quality level is very decent. Pretty good value, I seem to recall. Easy location, fairly central. Worth visiting if you are in STL.
The Taproom was visited on our trip back to Virginia. The location is excellent for the interstate traveler. It has ample parking. The service from Joel was outstanding. The rueben sandwich was very good. They do require a 5 beer flight. This is a sure stop in St Louis.
Visited for dinner later on a Sunday evening. Located near downtown in a big, beautifully restored old world brick building. The interior is sizeable, beautiful restored wood and brick. There is a bar area straight ahead as you enter, as well as another bar and dining room to the right. Selection was 14 house beers as well as 2 casks. Mostly standard lineup, though a couple of seasonal and special beers. A small pilot brewery system is visible through the window at the end of the room. Bartender very engaging and personable. Food is standard pub menu (a few traditional British offerings) plus a nice array of mussels. Great vibe to the place, I enjoyed this visit more than the Bottleworks location.
76 = ★★★ (Worth the visit, must for locals, and visitors with time)
I only use the total score, not the component parts.
Classic brewpub in downtown St Louis. Pretty quiet when I got there but I got there near close. The place is quite large, 2 full bars and a merch/bottle store. Service was quite homey and friendly and the beers were good. Prices were also quite resonable. Didnít try the food but they had some good looking options. Iíd revisit again when in Slu.
Iíve been to this taproom a couple of times, most recently by myself while playing a show in St Louis. Overall this is a nice place to visit, nothing extraordinary about it, nice food, good beers on tap, good sampler options, and nice rarish beers to take home if you choose to do so. Would go back again for sure, one of the best beer places in St Louis.
A solid spot in StL with good food and a nice tap list. The ambiance is good, which is better than I can say for the service; our server was cold and disinterested until he dropped off the bill. Service aside, the place is worth a stop if youíre in the area.
