Probably already on any to do list way before hitting town in Bamberg. A big old house, smack in the middle of everything. Fairly large and with several rooms, hallways and a patio in the back. All very authentic, with beer casks and beer related items, as well as your everyday antlers and old kitschy art hanging on the walls. Being what it is and where it is, the place tends to get packed with people, and it?s not a place to just go get a beer or just chill out. Beer is splendid though, and the food is worth a stop as well.
This is a world classic inn serving a world classic beer uncarbonated vom Faß. Therefore it gets crowded. So go at quieter times to enjoy it more. With that exception, if you do not like it, adjust your personality.
Visited on Friday night. Busy traditional pub in the centre of the old town. Great interior. Two rooms inside, one which seems to be for the locals and one for everyone else. Many people just take a beer from the counter that is in the corridor and drink it outside. More beers available inside though. Between us we tried the rauch weizen, rauch märzen and the urbock.Preferred the märzen at Spezial but the other two beers here were really good. Service was typically (for Germany) brusque and efficient (tho’ one waitress in the ’locals bar’ was outright unfriendly). Didn’t try any food. Prices good. Great place to visit.
