This place rocks! Jan was off the day I was there, but it did not matter. Karen and Mike were incredibly helpful. The selection was awesome. So many beers that are not available in IL and certainly not Georgia. Lots of super small Wisconsin breweries. New Glarus, Tyranena, Capital, Central Waters, Furthermore, Sprecher, Cross Plains, Lake Louie, Lakefront, among others. Mix a six was also very nice!
Location on Madison’s Westside, conveniently located off Highway 14 and just a 2 hour drive from Chicago’s Northern Suburbs.
August 2016 update: the store has been heavily remodeled since the last time I visited, which was probably in 2008-9 or so. It’s not a large place and they try to cram in an awful lot of quality wine and liquor as well, so those looking for the largest selection will be disappointed - but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality, with lots of unusual and uncommon stuff, from the Midwest and elsewhere. All the bombers and 750s are in a walk-in cooler, and there are quite a few to browse, so bring a jacket or sweater! Larger sake selection than I’ve seen elsewhere also; pretty helpful service - the two people working weren’t super knowledgeable about beer, but knew what to do to try to answer my questions between their database and calls to the University Ave Steve’s location.
(January 2004) Best selection I’ve seen in the Madison area, though I have to admit I haven’t hit that Woodmans yet. Most WI micros well respresented, including as PJones mentions some of the rarities; also carries New Glarus limited edition stuff (like the Imperial and Triple) which can be hard to find. Small but well-chosen collection of Belgians, British, etc. Good service, parking lot, right off the Beltline, beer-friendly lighting. A must-stop in the mad city.
I think this place has improved since some of the earlier ratings in the volume and quality of its selection. Most of the beer is kept cool, not out on the shelf. Cleaner and better organized than a majority of liquor stores. Not a must-visit, but a good store with some nice options.
Came here for GTMW ticket release. A nice store with a good amount of the beers in coolers. A nice set up making it easy to find beers. Service was good despite the GTMW crowds. Selection was solid compared to other area stores. Prices were inline as well. A nice Madison area store.
Visited on a Saturday night during a short trip to Madison. Bright, medium sized store, clean but nothing special looks-wise. Helpful and knowledgeable 2 guys behind the counter. Some food. Port wine selection suckie. Beer is mostly 6 packs in cooler with 2 smaller sections for imports and big bottles. So, selection is a bit small but decent stuff. Some harder beers to get like Intense Red and Shorts 6 packs. But the import selection is pretty limited. Make your own 6 packs is a small section (but in cooler). Prices on make your own were weird, for some reason some bottles were 1.99 even if they came from 7.99 six packs while others were appropriately priced. Nothing to come out for but if in the area and need something more than the average supermarket (which in WI is usually good enough) you can come here.
Stopped by on a Friday morning while the store was not too busy. Service was decent. As the other reviews have said, they stock a lot of local beers. Import section is somewhat lacking. Very clean nice store. Found more unusual things at their competition.
How the hell this place rates higher than Riley’s is beyond me. Is it a decent selection? Sure. Locals are well represented. A good, but certainly not impressive selection of singles. Lacking heavily in the imports. Certainly a better than average store, chances are you’ll find something, but far from being a destination.
