The best of conistons 4 pubs for variety. Cosy atmosphere inside. Stunning veiw outside. 8 beers on cask mainly from Cumbria. Prices comparable to the rest of the lake district a welcome sight after a day on the fells.

As you walk off Coniston Old Man, down the tourist route via Coppermines Valley stay on the right side of Church Beck heading towards Dixon Ground. You’ll find yourself arriving at the Sun Inn, one of two top pubs in Coniston. A good selection of real ale, very comfortable and a pleasant seating area outside for the sunny days. This really is a very nice pub indeed and the beers I’ve tried there have all been well kept and in good condition. My only gripes are related to service and food. The first time I visited the pub I was tired and spitting feathers after a long walk in the fells. I arrived to find what I think was an Open University Geology field trip group dithering at the bar ahead of me. Despite the numerous staff hanging around the place, nobody made the effort to reduce the big queue at the bar. My second gripe was the ploughman’s lunch which, while nice enough, wasn’t up to what it should be ... I will wait for a future visit to see if that’s typical of the food there.

Solid selection, the atmosphere is happy, and the beers were in good condition. Off the main road in Coniston, on the path twds the Old Man trails and easy to find. Well worth pairing with the Black Bull, especially given the latter only has the house/Coniston beers.

8 real ales - great list - one of the biggest selections I’ve ever seen. The vibe is nice - it’s all good. This is up the road up the hill a bit from the Black Bull and well worth the visit.
